Ram Lalla idol to be illuminated with Surya Tilak on Ram Navami: All you need to know

Ram Navami is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated to honour the birth anniversary of Lord Ram. The festival falls on the ninth day of the Chaitra month during the Shukla Paksha, marking the conclusion of Chaitra Navratri. In 2024, Ram Navami will be celebrated on April 17 with fervour and devotion by millions of devotees all around the world.

In January this year, the historic Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated with the Pran Pratishtha ceremony. And now, on the occasion of the first Ram Navami after the inauguration of the temple, the idol of Lord Ram will receive the Surya Tilak on Wednesday.

According to reports, the Surya Tilak will take place at noon for 5 minutes on Ram Navami. During the process of Surya Tilak, the sun’s rays will symbolically mark the forehead of the statue of Ram Lalla’s idol. The idol will be placed at the Garbhagriha for exactly 5 minutes. Scientists have installed an optomechanical system that has an infrared filter with the ability to absorb or reflect high-energy photons without transferring the heat to the surface.

The team of scientists from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) in Roorkee have taken extra precautions placing the idol of Ram Lalla to protect it from extra heating. They have placed the infrared filter on the first floor from where the sun rays enter the Garbhagriha.

The brains behind the historic Surya Tilak of Lord Ram at Ram Mandir are the scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru and a private firm called Optics and Allied Engineering (Optica). The technology was devised with the further cooperation of the scientists from CBRI.

The optomechanical system will concentrate the light at the centre of Lord Ram’s forehead, which will be followed by a gradual fade. The objective of this Surya Tilak is to cast light on the forehead of Lord Ram’s statue with natural sunlight at noon on the Ram Navami. The optomechanical system is equipped with precision lenses and mirrors to harness sunlight on the forehead of Lord Ram’s idol.
