Summary

Nawab Fida Hussain of Lucknow brought this sapling from the area of Shah Faisal Mosque of Islamabad, Pakistan and planted it in Digha, Patna. It is believed that Nawab Sahib used to have a lot of cows, he used to irrigate the plants with the leftover milk.

Thin seed, more pulp, thin peel and such a taste that you will go crazy… this is the identity of Patna’s Dudhiya Maldah.

In the mango season, the story about the taste of the world-famous Dudhiya Maldah of the Digha area of Patna resonates even across the seven seas.

Dudhiya Maldah is the most special among all the varieties of the king of fruits, mango.

From the President to the Prime Minister, this mango consignments are sent abroad.

Pramod Kumar, the manager of the mango orchard located in Bihar Vidyapeeth of Patna, said there was a time when this mango orchard was in the entire Digha area.

However, due to the formation of concrete jungles, the orchard has shrunk and is limited to only a few areas.

Irrigated with milk

Nawab Fida Hussain of Lucknow brought this mango sapling from the area of Shah Faisal Mosque of Islamabad, Pakistan and planted it in Digha, Patna, Pramod Kumar said.

It is believed that Nawab Sahib used to have a lot of cows, he used to irrigate the plants with the leftover milk, one day when the tree grew and fruit came out, a milk-like substance came out. After which it was named Dudhiya Malda.

Supplied to 33 countries

According to Pramod Kumar,  the mango consignments were sent to 33 countries in the last season.

Mangoes are sent from here to all the leaders including the Prime Minister and President of the country. Apart from this, all the countries including the USA, England, Japan, and Dubai are crazy about this mango and orders come every year.

This mango ripens and is ready in June. Mango is sold at the rate of about 100 per kg.

The garden will be found here in Patna

“I have heard from my grandfather that earlier there used to be a mango forest from Boring Canal Road of the capital to Digha forest, but now a concrete jungle has been built in this area. Due to this, the forest has shrunk and is now present only in a few places.

“Dudhiya Malda mango is found in Raj Bhavan, Bihar Vidyapeeth, Saint Xavier’s College and Kurji Family Hospital. There are around 50 Dudhiya Malda trees in Bihar Vidyapeeth, while about 1,000 trees are still left in Patna. Many trees in it are from that era,” Pramod said.

This mango looks white. If you keep all the mangoes in one place, then the one which is the whitest is Dudhiya Malda.

How is the fruit this year?

Pramod says that this year there has been a lot of damage due to heat wave. There are fewer fruits and the fruits which are there are falling. For the last two years, there has been more damage due to the weather.

Currently, Bihar Vidyapeeth has a mango orchard of 33 acres.  There are many different types of mango trees on this compound apart from Dudhiya Malda. But every year it is decreasing.

Every year ten trees are drying up. There are about 40 such mango trees in Bihar Vidyapeeth which are from the time of Nizam.
