Will BCCI scrap the Impact Player rule in the IPL? Jay Shah provides big update
Summary
Jay Shah has said that the Impact Player rule was introduced as an experiment to provide greater playing time to additional Indian players.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has not ruled out the possibility of scrapping the Impact Player rule from the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) onwards.
“Impact player was used as a test (in this IPL), it was done so that two Indian players could get a chance. It’s not permanent, we will have a discussion with the Indian team captain, players, franchises, coaches and then take a call on it. The meeting can happen once the World Cup is over,” Shah said in an interview to the Indian Express.
What is the Impact Player rule?
The Impact Player rule means that every team can effectively play with 12 players. Across both innings, they are allowed to substitute in one player for someone originally selected in the playing XI. They can either use it to bolster their batting or strengthen the bowling depending upon the situation of the game.
Whilst there was mixed response for the rule last season, concerns have grown in the current campaign with players openly making their dislike for the same known to the powers that be.
Most importantly, the Impact Player facility means that teams prefer playing specialists instead of all-rounders, depriving the likes of Shivam Dube and Venkatesh Iyer to bowl, which is their secondary skill.
Leading the voice against this rule has been Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who explained, “I’m not a big fan of impact player. You are taking out so much from the game just to make it little entertainment for the people around. But if you look [at] genuinely just cricketing aspect of it…. I can give you so many examples – guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us [India team] is not a good thing.”
Will BCCI adhere to the words of the national team captain and do away with this experiment? Only time will tell.
