Shubman Gill scores his 4th IPL century with impactful ton against Chennai Super Kings

Shubman Gill brought up his fourth ton in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he touched the three-figure mark against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. Gill scored his century in 50 deliveries, powered by nine fours and six maximums as he joined hands with Sai Sudarshan to unleash mayhem on the CSK bowlers in terrific batting conditions.

Gill was backed by the Gujarat Titans (GT) batting coach Gary Kirsten to produce impactful outings in their last few matches of the campaign. So far, he had blown hot and cold in the current campaign, often failing to accelerate or capitalise upon a good start.

However, a weakened CSK bowling attack in the absence of the likes of Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman, and Deepak Chahar presented him the perfect opportunity re-discover his touch and make a mark after being bogged down by criticism over his captaincy and also his snubbing from the final Indian squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that will be co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies in June.

Though Gill will travel as a reserve player, he was one of the main contenders for the opening spot that will now be graced by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“I think he has enjoyed the captaincy, it’s something that takes time to really master, so I think he enjoyed it this season. He is a world-class player so I have no doubt that in the next 3 games, he will put in 1-2 good performances, no doubt,” Gary Kirsten said about Gill’s captaincy before this match.
