Summary

Australia are placed in Group B for the T20 World Cup, along with four other teams, i.e. England, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland. They begin their group stage matches against Oman on June 6 in Barbados, and will play their forthcoming fixtures in Antigua and Barbuda along with St. Lucia.

Australian speedster Pat Cummins has asserted in his carefree demeanour that he is certain that his team will qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that will be co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies next month.

Simultaneously, Cummins has warned that he doesn’t care who else makes it to the last-four, implying a sense of silent confidence amongst the Mitchell Marsh-led team to go the distance in the biennial competition.

“Definitely Australia. And then you can choose which three you want,” was Cummins’ response, when asked about the possible semi-final candidates for the T20 World Cup by Shibani Gharat of CNBC-TV18. Upon being pressed by the anchor to name his other three favourites for the competition, Cummins insisted, “I don’t care; you can pick any of them.”

How are Australia placed in the T20 World Cup?

Australia have won the T20 World Cup that was held at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2021, however, they bowed out before the semi-finals in the next edition of the tournament that they hosted the following year.

Despite spearheading the team to the ODI World Cup title in November 2023, Cummins is not leading the team in the T20 World Cup, with Marsh, who was adjudged the Player of the Match in the final in 2021, has been given the mantle of the team for the T20 World Cup.

“I think, through experience and playing, you come to realise that you have done it before in the past. So, kind of look back at the good performances and just know that you have got it in you. Even if you are having a bad trot or it hasn’t gone well for you in the last few games, there are still a lot of games you can draw on, and that motivates me,” Cummins spoke about his mindset that motivates him to step up for his team when the stakes are high.

Pat Cummins’ T20I record

Cummins has played 52 T20Is for Australia, notching 57 dismissals at an exemplary economy rate of 7.43. He has maintained a bowling average of 24.77 and strike rate of 20, operating skilfully in all phases of the game.
