Marcus Stoinis masterclass helps LSG achieve highest successful run chase at Chepauk against CSK

Marcus Stoinis scored 124* against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Tuesday. This was the first defeat that the CSK faced at home this season, whereas LSG reached the target of 211 to make it the highest successful run chase on the ground in IPL history. Batting at No. 3, Stoinis struck 13 boundaries and six maximums to remain unbeaten till the end and take LSG past the finishing line.

LSG were handed early blows by the dismissals of openers Quinton de Kock (0) and KL Rahul (16) under five overs. However, the LSG ploy of promoting Stoinis worked wonders as he stayed until the end and completed the task, majorly due to a crucial 70-run partnership with Nicholas Pooran for the fourth wicket.

CSK produced a forgettable bowling performance, muddled with a lot of misfieldings as well in crucial junctures of the game. Mustafizur Rahman was supposed to defend 17 off the final over, but ended the game after conceding 51 off 3.3 overs that he delivered. Similarly, impact player Shardul Thakur went for 42 off the 18 deliveries that he bowled, and Matheesha Pathirana scalped two dismissals in his four-over quota after giving away 35 runs.

Deepak Chahar had picked the wicket of Quinton in the first over but he mysteriously didn’t return to field later on, despite delivering a formidable opening spell where he conceded only 12 runs. Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja bowled four overs between the two of them, leaking 37 and not picking any wickets. For Stoinis, it was a timely ton given that he had to assert his importance within the setup as he was one of their three draft picks along with KL and Ravi Bishnoi upon the formation of the franchise in 2022.
