Summary

Matheesha Pathirana has been CSK’s go-to bowler in the death overs.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) speedster Matheesha Pathirana has returned to Sri Lanka as he is nursing a hamstring injury that he picked during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

“Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery,” an official statement by CSK read.

The franchise added, “The right-arm pacer played six matches in IPL 2024 picking up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.68. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery.”

Pathirana had joined the CSK setup as a replacement for Adam Milne in their disappointing campaign in IPL 2022. He played only a handful of games in that season, but assumed a critical responsibility in their title-winning run the following year.

The pacer played 12 games in IPL 2023, notching 19 dismissals at an incredible economy rate of 8.01. Overall, he has represented CSK in 26 IPL games and taken 47 wickets at an economy of 7.83. He has taken two four-wicket hauls and his bowling strike rate of 12.40 paints a terrific picture of his innate ability to secure dismissals at timely intervals.

Gradually, Pathirana has grown to become an instrumental part of the Sri Lankan team as well. He has played 18 international matches for them, including 12 ODIs and six T20Is. Pathirana has picked 28 wickets for the national tea across both formats.

In addition to CSK, Pathirana has played for a host of teams in competitive cricket, including: Sri Lanka U19, Chennai Super Kings, Sri Lanka, Kandy Warriors, Bangla Tigers, Kandy Falcons, Desert Vipers, Colombo Strikers, Trinbago Knight Riders, Rangpur Riders.

He won’t be involved any further for them in the rest of this season, which is a huge blow to the Super Kings and their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.
