Here’s why Shubman Gill will be disappointed on not making it to the Indian T20 World Cup squad
Summary
Gill has played 14 T20Is for India and scored 335 runs at a strike rate of 147.57. He has notched a century and a half-century each in the format for Indian colours, but will have to ward off strong competition primarily from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hands the team an option to open with a right hand-left hand combination upfront.
Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill has said in an interview with the Hindustan Times that he will be disappointed with not making it to the Indian squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 despite having scored 890 runs to win the Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
There is massive suspense over who would open for India in the World Cup that will be co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies. Whilst Rohit Sharma is set to take one spot, the race is wide open amongst Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill to partner the Mumbai Indians (MI) player.
This season, leading GT, Gill has aggregated 304 runs in nine matches so far. He averages 38 with a strike rate of 146 and has scored two half-centuries. Gill has smashed 27 fours and nine maximums, helping GT get strong starts.

“After scoring almost 900 runs (in IPL) last season, I would obviously be disappointed as a player. I would still be cheering for the players and wish them the best,” Gill said during the interview.
He added, “I played the 50 overs World Cup last year and it was a dream for me to represent my country in a World Cup. If I am able to make it to this year’s T20 World Cup, it would be nothing short of a dream coming true. Last year’s World Cup experience would help me as we try to win the World Cup.”
