Australian opener Jake Fraser McGurk provided a power-packed start to the Delhi Capitals (DC) innings by smashing 50 off 20 deliveries in their clash against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday (May 7).
McGurk was roped in by DC as a replacement for speedster Lungi Ngidi in March for his base price at ₹20 lakhs. Against RR, he powered the Capitals to a formidable start by hammering seven boundaries and three maximums, before being dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin in in the fifth over. However, DC had already put up 50 on the board till then, reaping rich rewards of Jake’s proactive batting approach.
Accordingly, Jake has become the batter with the most half-centuries in the IPL scored under 20 deliveries, having achieved this feat thrice in the current campaign.
DC endured a difficult start to the season, with a misfiring batting unit troubling their cause. However, they recovered that momentum and have secured five victories in 11 matches so far, a lot of which is down to their aggressive approach at the top.

“Jakey is an outstanding talent. I think you know the way he’s taking on the IPL, he’s taken it by storm, they’re all loving him, and certainly, the Delhi crew are enjoying his company and enjoying what he brings to the team and there’s no doubt that he’s going to have a huge future, wherever he plays,” Marsh told Australian radio station SEN.
He added, “But we feel like we’ve got all bases covered within our team. Heady and David Warner have been fantastic for us, not only for a long period of time but over the last 18 months building towards this (T20) World Cup. We’re really comfortable that we’ve got the right 15, to hopefully take us deep into the (T20) World Cup.”
Will the 22-year-old inspire DC to a surprise playoffs qualification this time around? Only time will tell.
