Axar Patel wary of injuries before T20 World Cup, says playing cautiously
Summary
Axar has kept the batters check with his bowling in a tournament where bowlers from across teams have been taken to the cleaners. His economy rate in nine matches has been 7.06, having secured seven scalps so far. That is fairly impressive given that the scoring rates have spiked up recently in the wake of the Impact Player rule.
Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounder Axar Patel is hoping that he doesn’t pick up an injury as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 that will be held at the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies nears. Patel was promoted to No. 3 for DC in their match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
The southpaw came ahead of his teammates to bat in order to counter the left-arm spin of R Sai Kishore. He hammered five boundaries and four maximums to score 66 off 43 deliveries, giving a good account of his batting credentials before the World Cup, considering that the criticism about his counterpart Ravindra Jadeja and his batting strike rate has heated up lately.
“You look at my World Cup record or a major series, it’s always an injury at the wrong time that forces me on the sidelines. I am just not going to think about all these things for now,” Axar quipped about his chances of making it to the World Cup squad.

He added, “It is tough dealing with an injury at an inopportune time but I am used to it since it’s been happening for the last two or three years. I am happy in my own world and my own space. I am not trying to pressure myself into preparing for the World Cup, but instead, remain in the present and see how I can optimise my performance.”

“When you know the batters are going to go hard at you from both ends, it depends on what you are thinking. If you are worried about being hit, you will miss your target and get him. I keep thinking about executing my plan. Even then, after pitching it where I had planned, if he still hits it out of the park, I am fine with it,” he signed off.
