Mahagathbandhan announces seat-sharing in Bihar, RJD to contest on 26 seats, Cong 9

The Mahagathbandhan — the opposition alliance in Bihar — has announced the seat-sharing arrangement in the politically important state for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will contest on 26 seats, Congress on 9, CPI(ML) Liberation on 3 and CPI and CPI(M) on one each.

As per the announcement, the Congress has been made to give up the Purnea Lok Sabha seat, which recent entrant Pappu Yadav, husband of Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan, was hoping to contest. The seat will be contested by RJD, which recently gave the party ticket to JD(U) turncoat Bima Bharti, but stopped short of announcing it formally.

Bihar will vote in all the seven phases starting April 19. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

The RJD has fielded its candidates in all four seats going to polls in the first phase. The process for filing nomination papers for the second phase of voting is underway.

During the 2019 polls, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a landslide victory in the state, grabbing 39 of the 40 seats in the state. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 17 seats, its NDA allies JD(U) and LJP got 16 and 6 seats each. On the other hand, the Mahagathbandhan — which included the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others — was restricted to just one seat.
