The Thoothukkudi Lok Sabha constituency comprises the following legislative assembly segments: Vilathikulam, Thoothukkudi, Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam, Ottapidaram (Reserved for SC), Kovilpatti.

In the 2014 election, J Jayasingh Thiyagaraj Natterjee of the AIADMK was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha by drawing 3,66,052 votes, or a 39.92% of the total 9,16,778 ballots cast. The constituency had witnessed a turnout of 69.96% in 2014, which saw DMK’s P Jegan lose by 1.24 lakh votes.
DMK’s SR Jeyadurai had defeated AIADMK’s Cynthia Pandian by a margin of 76,649 votes to become the constituency’s first MP.
