Summary
The state, in a submission to the Supreme Court, revealed that while the Centre has agreed to release ₹3,500 crore, Karnataka’s total demand stood at a staggering ₹18,000 crore.
The Supreme Court on Monday, April 29, directed the Centre to disclose the quantum of relief recommended by the inter-ministerial committee for Karnataka, which has sought drought relief funds. The next date of hearing is May 6.
In a submission to the apex court, the state revealed that the Centre has agreed to release ₹3,500 crore while the total demand stood at a staggering ₹18,000 crore.
The state has approached the Central government seeking drought relief funds, citing pressing needs due to agricultural distress and water scarcity.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the state argued that claims raised according to Disaster Management norms are still pending. Karnataka officials expressed dissatisfaction with the Centre’s approach, alleging non-disclosure of the relief recommended by the committee.
The state government has declared 226 out of the total 236 Taluks in Karnataka as drought-hit and said there was a crop loss in 48 lakh hectares of land.
According to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, against the demand for ₹18,171 crore for drought relief, the union government ordered the release of only ₹3,454 crore, that too, after the state approached the Supreme Court.
The amount was not even a quarter of the state’s demand, he noted.
