Will India revoke Prajwal Revanna’s passport? Here’s what foreign ministry said
Summary
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that no visa note was issued, as diplomatic passport holders do not require a visa to travel to Germany.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday, April 2, addressed the controversy surrounding the travel of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna to Germany, clarifying that no political clearance was sought from or issued by MEA for his trip.
During a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that no visa note was issued, as diplomatic passport holders do not require a visa to travel to Germany. MEA also affirmed that it has not issued a visa note for any other country in this matter.
“No political clearance was either sought from or issued by MEA in respect of the travel of the said MP to Germany,” Jaiswal said.
He further emphasised, “Obviously, no visa note was issued either. No visa is required for diplomatic passport holders to travel to Germany. The Ministry has also not issued any visa note for any other country for the said MP…Yes, he travelled on a diplomatic passport.”
The Ministry’s statement comes amid allegations of sexual harassment against Revanna, who is reported to be in Germany. The Janata Dal (Secular) has suspended the Hassan MP in connection with the accusations.
Jaiswal, in response to questions about the possibility of revoking Revanna’s passport, refrained from giving a direct answer. “As regards the possible revocation of the passport of any individual, I would refer you to the relevant provisions of the Passport Act 1967. We are not in receipt of any directions from any court in this regard,” he stated.
The government of Karnataka has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations against Revanna.
