After facing defeat in Amethi, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi contested from Wayanad in the 2019 elections and won by over 7 lakh votes, with a vote share of 64.7%. He defeated Communist Party of India’s (CPI) candidate, P.P. Suneer, by over 4.3 lakh votes. However, in March 2023, Gandhi was disqualified due to a defamation case but later reinstated as an MP by the Supreme Court in August 2023.
In past elections, Congress leader M.I. Shanavas won Wayanad in 2009 and 2014. Shanavas secured significant victories, with vote shares ranging from 41.2 to 49.8%. However, recent reports suggest a shift in voter sentiment, indicating potential challenges for the Congress.
