Thrissur Lok Sabha election: Suresh Gopi, K Muraleedharan, VS Sunil Kumar vie for victory, over 66% voting till 5 pm
Summary
Among the key competitors from the Thrissur seat in the 2024 election are BJP’s Suresh Gopi, former state minister VS Sunil Kumar who has been fielded by CPI and Congress leader K Muraleedharan.
Thrissur, one of the 20 parliamentary constituencies in southern state of Kerala, is voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the second phase on Friday (April 26). The seat is witnessing a fierce triangular contest between the Congress-led UDF, CPI(M)-led LDF and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The voter turnout was 66.26%.
In the 2019 general elections, the seat saw a voter turnout of 77.92%.
While actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi is representing the BJP, former state minister VS Sunil Kumar has been fielded by the CPI and Congress has nominated senior leader and sitting MP from Vatakara, K Muraleedharan.
Credited with significantly boosting the saffron party’s vote share in the 2019 elections, Gopi is spearheading the BJP’s efforts to secure victory in the seat and potentially break its electoral dry spell in the state.
A stronghold for the Congress, Thrissur has in the past seen a few surprising upsets, notably the defeat of former Chief Minister late K Karunakaran.
Recently the grand old party faced a setback after Karunakaran’s daughter Padmaja Venugopal left it and went on to join the BJP.
Padmaja Venugopal’s brother Muraleedharan has replaced sitting MP TN Prathapan as the Congress is making all possible efforts to retain the constituency in the 2024 general elections.
On the other hand, the LDF has fielded VS Sunil Kumar, who is a popular face among the masses and is known for his grassroots connection with the people in the region.
The Left enjoys considerable support in Thrissur, which is rooted in the legacy of late leaders like Chief Minister C Achutha Menon and VV Raghavan.
