Ahead of Lok Sabha election, Eknath Shinde has announced Yamini Yashwant as their candidate for south Mumbai seat. Jadhav, the incumbent MLA from Byculla Assembly constituency, will be facing sitting two-term Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant.
The South Mumbai seat has been a focal point of contention, with capable leaders from both the BJP and Shiv Sena vying for it. However, after prolonged discussions within the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, Jadhav was chosen as the candidate.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Arvind Ganpat Sawant of Shiv Sena defeated Congress’s Milind Deora by a margin of 1,00,067 votes, securing a total of 421,937 votes with a vote share of 52.64%. Deora received 321,870 votes with a vote share of 40.15%.
Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar and Tourism Minister Mangalprabhat Lodha were considered as potential BJP contenders, but the final decision favored Jadhav. Milind Deora, who recently shifted from Congress to Shiv Sena and served as an MP from the constituency in 2004 and 2009, also expressed interest in contesting the seat.
This decision comes amidst controversy, as last year, income tax raids on Jadhav and her husband Yashwant uncovered ₹2 crores in cash from their residence. The department allegedly threatened to inform the Election Commission about the non-disclosure of ₹15 crore routed through a Kolkata-based hawala trader in her election affidavit filed during the 2019 Assembly polls.
The election for the Mumbai South seat is scheduled for the fifth phase on May 20. Maharashtra, with 48 Lok Sabha seats, is voting in the first five phases, with polling already concluded in several constituencies including Ramtek, Nagpur, and Bhandara-Gondiya.
