Summary

The decision announced on Friday, May 10, came as a relief to Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amidst a crucial phase of the electoral campaign. However, it elicited mixed reactions from various political quarters. Here’s who said what!

Reactions from various political leaders poured in as the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until June 1, in a money laundering case. The decision announced on Friday, May 10, came as a relief to Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amidst a crucial phase of the electoral campaign.

While West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi welcomed the court’s intervention, BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Nipuram expressed reservations, suggesting that Kejriwal should not remain in office.

“I am very happy to see that Shri Arvind Kejriwal has got interim bail. It will be very helpful in the context of the current elections,” said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in an X post.

Senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal in the top court, said, “It is strength of our demo that India’s Most Wanted (per govt & BJP) is out in 6 weeks with 21 electioneering days left despite heaviest legal artillery rolled out by Govt. We must fight &never lose faith. Vivek Jain’s assistance was invaluable & matchless. truth must triumph.”

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar also weighed in, stating, “”I welcome the interim bail order granted to Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal by the SC. India remains steadfast in the pursuit of democracy.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray hailed the decision as a significant indicator of changing times. “Arvind Kejriwal ji getting justice and relief against dictatorial regime in the country is a huge sign of winds of change. He has been speaking the truth and that is what the BJP dislikes. More power to him and the INDIA alliance for Bharat. We will protect our Constitution and democracy!” he said.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, “We welcome this decision of the Supreme Court. SC’s decision is a tight slap on the face of ED & central government. The central government has used ED as a political agency against the opposition party…When you arrest an elected CM what kind of level playing field is it?…”

AAP leader Atishi remarked it as victory for democracy and Constitution. “Supreme Court verdict of granting interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal has proved that the truth has won, democracy has won, and the Constitution of the country has won. Whenever our Constitution was threatened, the Supreme Court has come to protect it. Even today, Supreme Court’s decision to grant interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal to participate in election campaigns will protect our country’s democracy.”

Delhi Minister and AAP leader Gopal Rai echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude to the Supreme Court for providing a “ray of hope” to those who uphold constitutional values. He said, “Today the Supreme Court has given a ray of hope to all those who believe in the Constitution. Our party, people of Delhi thank the Supreme Court.”

Expressing their joy, AAP workers gathered outside the party office, raising slogans and chanting in support of their leader.  Neel Garg, a prominent AAP leader described the ruling as a momentous occasion, stating, “This is a big day, not just for AAP and its workers, but also for every Indian who loves the nation, democracy, and Constitution.”

While the opposition leaders welcomed the decision, allowing Kejriwal to remain out of jail till June 1. However, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva cautioned, “Getting interim bail does not mean that you have been proven innocent…It will not affect the elections, BJP will win all 7 seats of Delhi.”
