Summary

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Rajasthan has 25 parliamentary constituencies, of which 12 went to polls in the first phase on Friday, April 19.

Congress, which has suffered back-to-back defeats in the last two general elections in Rajasthan, is facing a daunting task to unsettle the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 polls, especially after the ouster of the Ashok Gehlot-led government in the state last year.

A blend of both rural and urban settings, the north-western state comprises 25 parliamentary constituencies, of which 12 went to polls in the first phase on Friday, April 19. Voting for the remaining 13 seats will be held in the second phase on April 26.

For the first time since 1989, Congress had failed to open its account in Rajasthan in the 2014 elections, with rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), riding high on the ‘Modi wave,’ sweeping all the 25 seats. The saffron party repeated its performance in 2019 polls as well, wherein it won 24 of the 25 seats in the state, while the remaining one seat (Nagaur) was bagged by its former NDA partner, Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP).

The grand old party also faced a setback in the 2023 Assembly polls, where it was limited to just 70 seats, while the BJP clinched victory, securing 115 seats in the state Assembly.

While the BJP has fielded its candidates on all the 25 seats in the state for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has announced names for only 22 seats and has an understanding with its I.N.D.I.A. bloc ally CPI(M) in Sikar, RLP in Nagaur, and the newly-formed Bharatiya Adivasi Party (BAP) in the tribal-dominated Banswara constituency.

Voting dates

Polling for the 2024 polls in Rajasthan is being conducted in the first two phases. After 12 seats in phase one, the remaining 13 seats will go to polls on April 26. In the 2019 elections, the state registered a total voter turnout of 66.34%.
