Lok Sabha elections 2024 Phase 1: 1,625 candidates to battle it out for 102 seats

Summary

Eight Union Ministers, two former Chief Ministers and one ex-governor are among the candidates set to test their electoral fate in the first phase of the 2024 elections.

As many as 102 parliamentary constituencies across 21 states and Union Territories will be up for grabs in the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections slated for Friday, April 19. In total, there are 1,625 candidates in the fray in the first phase. Of these, only 134 are female candidates (8%), while the rest 1,491 are male.

Earlier, an analysis of 1,618 of 1,625 candidates by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 16% of them had declared criminal cases against them, and 25% of them had assets worth more than ₹1 crore.

Besides the 2024 general elections, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will conduct the Assembly polls simultaneously in the first phase.

2024 Lok Sabha elections: Constituencies going to polls in Phase 1

In the first phase of the 2024 elections, voting will be held across 102 of 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country.

Tamil Nadu: Polling will be held across all the 39 constituencies in the state including Tiruvallur, Chennai North, Chennai South, Chennai Central, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Arakkonam, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Arani, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.

Rajasthan: The state will vote in 12 of the 25 seats in the first phase. These include Ganganagar, Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur Rural, Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, Dausa and Nagaur.

Uttar Pradesh: Eight of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh will be up for grabs in Phase 1. On Friday, voting will be held in Pilibhit, Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina, Moradabad and Rampur.

Assam: Among the five of the 14 seats in the north-eastern state going to polls on April 19 are Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur.

Bihar: Aurangabad, Gaya, Jamui, and Nawada will vote in the first phase. The remaining 36 will conduct polling in the remaining phases.

Madhya Pradesh: The state has a total of 29 constituencies. Of this, six will be going to polls in phase one including Chhindwara, Balaghat, Jabalpur, Mandla, Sidhi and Shahdol.

Maharashtra: Among 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, the ones in the fray for April 19 are Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara-Gondia, Gadchiroli-Chimur and Ramtek.

West Bengal: Voting for 42 seats in West Bengal will be conducted across all seven phases. Out of them, Coochbehar, Alipurduars, and Jalpaiguri will hold polling on Friday.

Arunachal Pradesh:  Arunachal Pradesh East and Arunachal Pradesh West seats will vote in Phase 1.

Meghalaya: Polling will take place in both Shillong and Tura seats.

Manipur: Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur will be held in the first phase. Polling in Outer Manipur will also be conducted on April 26.

Besides them, voting will take place in one seat each in Chhattisgarh (Bastar), Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir (Udhampur) and Tripura (Tripura West).

2024 Lok Sabha elections: Key candidates in Phase 1

As many as eight Union Ministers, two former Chief Ministers and one ex-governor are among the candidates set to test their electoral fate in the first phase of the 2024 elections.

These include Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is eyeing a hat-trick of wins from the Nagpur seat. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is contesting from the Arunachal West seat and is pitted against former CM and president of Arunachal Pradesh Congress Nabam Tuki.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbanada Sonowal is also seeking a return to the Lower House of Parliament and fielded from Dibrugarh in Assam. Union Minister Sanjeev Baliyan is contesting from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh is also in competition and aiming for a hat-trick in Udhampur. Meanwhile, Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member Bhupendra Yadav is contesting against Congress MLA Lalit Yadav from the Alwar seat.

Among other ministers from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet are Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal from Bikaner parliamentary seat in Rajasthan and Union Minister of State for Fisheries L Murugan from Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.

Tamilisai Soundararajan, who recently resigned as Telangana Governor and Lt. Governor of Puducherry, is contesting from Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency on a BJP ticket.

Among other prominent names are Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram, who is seeking a re-election from the seat his father and former Union Minister P Chidambaram held for seven terms; Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai from Coimbatore seat; former Tamil Nadu minister A Raja from Nilgiris; DMK’s Kanimozhi from Thoothukudi; and Nakul Nath, son of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh.
