Lok Sabha elections 2024: Pallavi Dempo, Jyotiraditya Scindia among richest candidates in third phase

Pallavi Shrinivas Dempo, who is contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the South Goa seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, is the richest candidate in the third phase scheduled for May 7. Dempo has declared total assets worth over ₹1,361 crore, comprising around ₹1,250 crore in movable assets and roughly around ₹111 crore in immovable assets, as per the data shared by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).

In her election affidavit, she stated that she has assets worth ₹255.44 crore, while her husband Shrinivas Dempo has declared assets of ₹998.83 crore. They also have interests in mining, shipbuilding, luxury homes in Dubai and London, jewellery, besides other investments.

Earlier, Congress leader and Chhindwara MP Nakul Nath, who is son of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, was the richest candidate in the first phase, having total assets worth ₹717 crore. In the second phase, the grand old party’s Mandya candidate Venkataramane Gowda (Star Chandru) topped the list with assets worth more than ₹622 crore.

In the third phase, Dempo is followed by Union Minister and Scindia royal family scion Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is contesting from the Guna parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh on a BJP ticket. Scindia has declared total assets worth more than ₹424 crore.

Among others present in the top 10 are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s descendant and Kolhapur Congress candidate Chhatrapati Shahu Shahaji (₹342 crore); Dr Prabha Mallikarjun, the Congress candidate from Karnataka’s Davanagere (₹241 crore); BJP’s Satara candidate Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale (₹223 crore); Ranjitsinh Nimbalkar, fielded by BJP from Madha (₹205 crore); Praveen Singh Aron, Samajwadi Party’s candidate from Bareilly (₹182 crore); veteran leader Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule from Baramati (₹166 crore); Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of AIUDF from Dhubri seat (₹155 crore); and Poonamben Maadam, contesting on BJP ticket from Gujarat’s Jamnagar (₹147 crore).

Among the top 10 ‘crorepati’ candidates, five are from the BJP, two from the Congress and one each from the Samajwadi Party, AIUDF and NCP (SP).

In its report, the ADR further stated that among the 1,352 candidates, 29% (or 392 candidates) are ‘crorepatis’, while the average assets per candidate stands at ₹5.66 crore.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in India started on April 19 and will go on till June 1, covering all the 543 parliamentary constituencies in the country. The counting of votes will be done on June 4.
