Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani recently filed her nomination from Amethi parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh. She also held a grand road show and was accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and several other BJP leaders. In her election affidavit, Irani has declared movable assets worth ₹3.08 crore, while her husband Zubin Irani has movable assets of more than ₹3.3 crore.
Besides a bank deposit of ₹25,48,497, she has investments in bonds and debentures at ₹88,15,107 as well as allocations to NSS and postal savings, totalling ₹30,77,936. She owns motor vehicles worth ₹27,86,053 and jewellery of ₹37,48,440.
In terms of immovable assets, she possesses assets amounting to ₹5.66 crore, while her husband owns worth ₹5.51 crore.
According to reports, the total wealth of her family was around ₹11 crore during the 2019 general elections, which has now increased to over ₹17 crore — an increase of around ₹6 crore.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani is eyeing a second consecutive term from Amethi, which was earlier a bastion of the Congress party for a long time.
In the 2019 elections, the grand old party suffered a humiliating defeat after Irani secured a win against Rahul Gandhi by more than 55,000 votes.
Rahul Gandhi held this seat for three consecutive terms in 2004, 2009 and 2014. Before that, the seat was also held by his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
While the BJP has again pitched Irani from the Amethi seat, the Congress is yet to announce its candidate.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Congress has urged the top leadership in the party to field Rahul Gandhi again from this seat.
On his behalf, Gandhi earlier said that he will follow “whatever order” he gets from the party leadership.
Voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi will take place in the fifth phase on May 20, while the counting of votes will be done on June 4.
