Himachal Pradesh Lok Sabha elections 2024: Seats, schedule, Congress candidates and more
Summary
In the last two general elections, 2014 and 2019, the BJP won all four parliamentary constituencies in the state.
Himachal Pradesh, the only north Indian state where the Congress is in power on its own, is gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the by-polls to the six Assembly seats slated for June 1.
During the last two general elections — 2014 and 2019 — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won all four parliamentary constituencies in the state. However, Congress’ Pratibha Singh wrested the Mandi seat from the saffron party in 2021 during the by-election necessitated by the demise of then-incumbent MP Ram Swaroop Sharma.
The next year, the grand old party also secured a win in the 2022 Assembly elections, bagging 40 of 68 seats in the state. However, cracks in its state unit came to the fore during the Rajya Sabha election earlier this year when Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was defeated due to cross-voting by six MLAs of the ruling party.
The by-elections for six Assembly constituencies are being conducted after these seats fell vacant following the disqualification of the then legislators from the Assembly for defying the party whip. All the six Congress rebels later joined the BJP. They have now been fielded in the by-polls.
Besides making a comeback in Himachal Pradesh in the general elections, the Congress also faces a major challenge from the saffron party in Assembly by-polls as its result will have a major impact on the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government.
