Congress nominee from Puri Lok Sabha seat withdraws, citing no funds from party
Summary
BJP’s Sambit Patra and BJD’s Arup Patnaik have already filed their nomination from the Puri Lok Sabha constituency where elections will be held on May 25.
Congress nominee from the Puri Lok Sabha seat, Sucharita Mohanty, has decided not to contest the election, citing little financial aid from the party.
Elections will be held for the Lok Sabha seat on May 25, while the last date for filing nominations is Monday, May 6. Sambit Patra and Arup Patnaik have already filed their nominations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Biju Janata Dal (BJD), respectively.
Mohanty, who contested the Puri Lok Sabha seat unsuccessfully in 2014, told ANI, “I have returned the ticket because the party was not able to fund me. Another reason is that in some of the seats in seven Assembly segments, winnable candidates have not been given the ticket. Instead, some weak candidates got the ticket. I couldn’t contest like this.”

Mohanty, who did not file her nomination yet, also tried to raise funds through crowdfunding to support her campaign. To raise funds, she had shared UPI QR codes on her social media handles but did not find success. She also tried to slash the campaign spending to the minimum in order to contest elections.
In her letter to the Congress’ top leadership, she said, “Our campaign in Puri Parliamentary Constituency has been hit hard because the party has denied me funding. AICC Odisha In-Charge Dr Ajoy Kumar Ji asked me to fend for myself.”
