MP: Chhindwara reports highest voter turnout of over 70%, Congress’ Nakul Nath hopeful of second term

The Chhindwara constituency of Madhya Pradesh reported 73.85% polling till 5 pm in the first phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections. The state has reported a voter turnout of 63.25% across six constituencies.
EC officials said that polling began at 7 am and ended at 6 pm in most places. Chhindwara constituency was followed by Balaghat with 71.08%, Mandla at 68.96%, Shahdol at 60.40%, Jabalpur at 56.74%, and Sidhi at 51.56%, the official said.

As many as 88 candidates, 81 men and seven women are in the fray across the six constituencies. The total number of registered voters in the six constituencies is 1,13,09, 636 (57,20,780 male, 55,88,669 female and 187 transgender).
Chhindwara is the lone seat of Congress in the Lok Sabha from the state. Congress MP Nakul Nath is fighting for the second term against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vivek ‘Bunty’ Sahu.
The seat has been Congress’s bastion except for the 1997 bypoll when former chief minister Sunder Lal Patwa defeated Anita Nath. Former chief minister Kamal Nath has won the seat nine times.

During the 2019 elections, this constituency registered a total voter turnout of 82.42%. Nakul Nath secured a victory from Chhindwara in the 2019 elections, bagging 5,87,305 votes. He defeated rival BJP candidate Nathan Shah by over 37,000 votes.
