Chhattisgarh Lok Sabha elections 2024: Bhupesh Baghel among the list of Congress candidates
Summary
Following a major setback in last year’s Assembly polls, the Congress party is fielding bigwigs like former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in the 2024 general elections, aiming for a return in Chhattisgarh.
With the ruling BJP’s growing dominance in Chhattisgarh, the Congress party has pinned hopes on some of the experienced names, including former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, to make a comeback in the state, where voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is taking place in three phases.
Chhattisgarh, which has 11 parliamentary constituencies, is witnessing an intense poll campaign between the two national parties, the BJP and Congress. The 2024 general elections here are taking place in three phases, with the lone Bastar seat voting in the first phase on Friday, April 19.
In the second phase on April 26, three seats—Rajnandgaon, Mahasamund and Kanker—will go to the polls, followed by the third phase on May 7, when the remaining seven constituencies, including Surguja, Raigarh, Janjgir-Champa, Korba, Bilaspur, Durg and Raipur, will vote.
During the 2019 elections, the BJP bagged nine out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh, securing a 50.70% vote share. The Congress, on the other hand, was restricted to a mere two seats and received 40.91% of the votes. However, the grand old party did manage to improve its performance a bit compared with the 2014 elections, when it was limited to just one seat in the state.
Last year, the Congress suffered another setback in the state, when the Bhupesh Baghel-led government was dethroned by the BJP after it won 54 out of 90 seats in the state assembly elections.
Hoping for a revival both at the Centre and in the state of Chhattisgarh, the Congress party has fielded bigwigs like Bhupesh Baghel, Jyotsna Mahant and others in the 2024 elections.
