Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha elections: All about Congress candidates
Summary
In the 2024 general elections, Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a triangular contest between YSRCP, the Congress-led INDIA bloc and the NDA, which includes the BJP, TDP and JSP.
Under the leadership of YS Sharmila, the Congress party is aiming for a major comeback in Andhra Pradesh, where voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be held simultaneously with the state Assembly polls on May 13.
Sharmila, the daughter of united Andhra Pradesh’s former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and younger sister of incumbent Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, merged her YSR Telangana Party with the Congress earlier this year. She is currently the president of the Andhra Pradesh unit of the grand old party.
The state holds a major significance for Congress, as the swing votes of Andhra Pradesh played a key role in helping the party form government at the Centre during the 2004 and 2009 general elections.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) emerged as the largest party in the state, bagging 22 of the 25 seats with a vote share of 49.89%. The N Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won the remaining three constituencies and managed to get 40.19% of votes. Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress failed to open their accounts in the state.
In the 2024 elections, Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a triangular contest between YSRCP, the Congress-led INDIA bloc and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), TDP and Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party (JSP).
