Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates delved into a comprehensive dialogue on Friday, March 28, at the PM’s residence, touching upon a spectrum of subjects ranging from Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the digitalisation of public infrastructure and collective efforts to combat climate change.

Gates lauded the Indian populace for their swift integration of technology, noting their pioneering role in this transformative journey.

Addressing AI Challenges

Delving into the complexities of AI, PM Modi elucidated to Gates the global challenges posed by artificial intelligence. He stressed the imperative of comprehensive AI training and proposed the incorporation of watermarks to authenticate AI-generated content.

The PM issued a cautionary note on the deceptive capabilities of deepfake technology, advocating for clear labelling and full disclosure of its origins. Furthermore, he championed the necessity of a robust legal framework to govern both AI and deepfake technologies, emphasising the importance of responsible regulation in this rapidly evolving digital landscape.

PM Modi’s Vision for Digital Transformation

Expressing his vision, PM Modi said, “The concept of a digital divide elsewhere urged me to ensure its absence in our nation. Digital public infrastructure is not just a necessity but a fundamental enabler… Women in India have shown remarkable receptiveness to embracing new technologies.”

He highlighted the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ initiative as an emblematic example, revealing how women who once lacked even basic bicycle-riding skills now operate drones proficiently. This, he underscored, reflects a significant shift in mindset.
