A YouTube video helped this Bihar farmer earn ₹80,000 a month
Summary
A farmer in Bihar’s Samastipur district switched to duck farming after watching a YouTube video four years ago. Scroll down to know how much it costs to raise a 1,000 ducks and how much can you make from selling their eggs.
Mukesh Sahni, a resident of Ahmedpur village of Sarairanjan block in Samastipur district of Bihar, says he earns ₹80,000 a month selling ducks and eggs.
His journey began with a simple idea he stumbled upon in a YouTube video. Four years ago, he decided to put that idea into action and started his business. Today, he manages about 1,200 ducks on his farm and has the potential to add another 300 in the same space.
“I get about 750-800 eggs a day. The eggs go to hatcheries, and into food and medicines. They sell for ₹9.5 to ₹10 a piece,” Sahni told Local18.
He keeps a duck on the farm until it lays eggs and sells them once it stops. “A duck can lay eggs for three years on average,” he added.
The cost of maintaining the ducks would add up to ₹1.2 lakh over four months in his village near Samastipur, about 70 kilometres away from the state capital, Patna.
He further elaborates, ‘If you buy a thousand ducks, some of them would be male, which you can sell. If I have 600 female ducks and they give me a total of 500 ducks. Now, each can be sold for ₹10, do the math. You can make ₹5,000 daily.’
The daily cost of overheads would add up to ₹2,500, making it a lucrative business for Sahni.
