Summary

The incident took place on Friday evening when Swami Prasad Maurya was addressing a rally in support of a party candidate from the Fatehpur Sikri in Dauki.

A man, on Friday, hurled a shoe at Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party (RSSP) national president Swami Prasad Maurya during a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra.

The person has been identified as Dharmendra Dhakrey and has been arrested by the police. Further action is being taken against him, Dauki SHO Rampal Singh said.

Dhakrey is associated with the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM), a spokesperson of the organisation said.

In February this year, Maurya, a former minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, left the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and announced his political outfit — Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party.

The incident happened on Friday evening when Maurya was addressing a rally for his party candidate from Fatehpur Sikri in Dauki, PTI reported.

“One of our members hurled a shoe at Maurya when he was delivering his speech in Dauki. We were against the leader over his remarks against Ramcharitmanas,” ABHM spokesperson Sanjay Jaat told the news agency.

Earlier Maurya was criticised by many over his controversial statement alleging that there are certain verses in the Ramcharitmanas — a sacred text in the Awadhi language based on the epic Ramayana — which ‘insult’ a large section of the society based on caste. Hence, they should be banned, he had said.

Sanjay Jaat informed that the organisation has also written letters in blood, appealing the administration to admit Maurya in “mental asylum for disrespecting the Hindu saints and Ramcharitmanas”.

Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha members also threw ink on Maurya’s cavalcade and showed him black flags when it passed from Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehabad region. They even chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans to protest against him.

Sanjay Jaat informed that the ADHM members had been following Maurya’s cavalcade from the Fatehabad toll on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway.

“Some members even protested at Fatehabad and showed black flags (to Maurya’s cavalcade) when it was passing. Besides, they also threw ink on his car,” Jaat said.

Earlier this year, when he was leaving the Samajwadi Party, Maurya accused the leadership of discriminating against him. He further alleged that he was not defended by any of the party leaders over his statements on the Ramcharitmanas and the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in Ayodhya.

Maurya had joined the Samajwadi Party after ending ties with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. During the polls, he contested unsuccessfully for the Fazilnagar seat.

Before joining the BJP in 2016, Maurya was a part of the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and was the Leader of the Opposition during the Akhilesh Yadav regime.

A month ago, he said that he would contest the 2024 general elections from the Kushinagar seat as a candidate of his Rashtriya Shoshit Samaaj Party.
