Malda Airport, neglected by Airport Authority of India, cherished by locals for morning walks

The people of Malda continue to wait eagerly for the revival of flight services from Malda Airport even after the runway has been constructed by the West Bengal state government. Small aircraft services were assured. In between, helicopter services started from this airport. Now, the helicopter services also stopped. At present, the airport area remains unused and it is lying in a neglected state.
Sometimes, initiatives to open this airport were taken by the government. The Airport Authority of India |(AAI) officials have visited the site several times. But still, due to some unknown reasons, the airport opening process has not happened.

Lok Sabha elections are around the corner. Candidates of each political party campaign together, promising to solve various problems. However, most of the ordinary people of the district and the business community are asking the two MPs elected from Malda to take the initiative to make this airport operational.
The elected MPs will go directly to Delhi. So, the district businessmen feel that only the parliamentarians can revive the abandoned airport in Malda.
The present generation is unaware of how long it has been since an aircraft took off at the Malda airport, which was built on 144 acres of land in 1962. Earlier, Vayudoot operated flight services from here to Kolkata and Balurghat, but it did not last long. Later, the state government took the airport land on lease and reconstructed the runway. But, nothing happened after that even though plans to reopen this airport have been underway for a long time.
People from the neighbourhood regularly come here for morning and evening walks. They fear that even the runway built in the city will be destroyed due to official apathy.
If the flight service starts from Malda, on the one hand, there will be an increase in business and trade activities in the district as well as there will be a great improvement in various services from medical services in the district. Therefore, the district residents demand that this airport be opened soon.
