Gujarat Foundation Day 2024: Why and how the day is celebrated

Gujarat Day, also known as Gujarat Foundation Day, is celebrated every year on May 1 to mark the formation of the state. The vibrant western state of India celebrates its Foundation Day with great enthusiasm.

Gujarat was carved out of the Bombay State on May 1, 1960, after the Bombay Reorganisation Act.

Gujarat Foundation Day is not just a celebration of the state’s formation but also a celebration of its vibrant culture, rich heritage, and achievements over the years, and serves as a reminder of the state’s history and its contributions to the cultural tapestry of India.

On the same day, Maharashtra was also formed out of the Bombay State after two linguistic groups, Marathi and Gujarati-speaking people, demanded their separate states.

Every year, a special theme is announced to celebrate this occasion. However, the official theme for Gujarat Day 2024 hasn’t been announced yet. The day is celebrated with a range of cultural programmes, including folk dances, traditional music performances, and vibrant processions that showcase the state’s rich heritage.

The celebration also includes various exhibitions and fairs showcasing the art, crafts, and cuisine of the state. Additionally, the government buildings and monuments are illuminated to mark the occasion.
