The Doodle was illustrated by Bangalore-based guest artist Divya Negi.
The Google Doodle description read, “This Doodle celebrates Indian wrestler Hamida Banu, who is widely considered to be India’s first professional woman wrestler. Illustrated by Bangalore-based guest artist Divya Negi, today’s Doodle depicts Hamida surrounded by local flora and fauna.”
On May 4, 1954, Banu defeated Baba Pahalwan in just 1 minute and 34 seconds, which led to Pahalwan’s retirement from professional wrestling. As per the official website, “On this day in 1954, the wrestling match that earned Banu international recognition and acclaim was reported – she had defeated famed wrestler, Baba Pahalwan, in just 1 minute and 34 seconds, after which the latter retired from professional wrestling.”
Banu’s achievements serve as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, particularly women, across the country. Her remarkable accomplishments resonate beyond the wrestling arena, symbolising the resilience and determination of women to overcome societal norms and achieve greatness in male-dominated fields.
