IMD issues heatwave alert for Telangana, Bihar and West Bengal; rainfall in these states

The Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh and several cities in Odisha were in the grip of a sizzling heat wave, with Nandyal recording its maximum temperature at 45.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday — 4.6 notches above the season’s normal.
In Telangana’s Mangapet, the temperature reached 45.3 degrees Celsius, while it was recorded at 45.2 degrees in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The weather department further stated that several parts of Bihar and West Bengal too were in the grip of a heat wave.
The heat wave conditions have been prevailing over Odisha since April 15 and over the Gangetic West Bengal since April 17, it said.
In Odisha, Angul reported the highest temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius — 4.1 degrees above normal. It was followed by Baripada (44 degrees) where the maximum temperature was 6.5 notches higher than normal.
Major areas of the Gangetic West Bengal were gripped under above-normal temperatures as high as 8.6 degrees higher than usual. These included Panagarh (44.2 degrees), Kalaikunda at 44.3 degrees (+7.5), Midnapore at 43.4 degrees (+6.6), and Canning at 42.4 degrees (+6.9).
Kottayam in Kerala recorded its highest-ever temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius in April. Similarly, Alappuzha matched its maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius for the month. It last touched 38 degrees Celsius on April 1, 1987.
Bihar, too, saw above-normal temperatures in major areas with Sheikhpura recording 43.2 degrees Celsius which was 5.5 degrees above normal. It was followed by 42.7 degrees at Banka, which was 5.1 notches higher than usual for the season, the weather department said.
The IMD, in its daily bulletin, on Sunday, predicted that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions would likely continue over East and south Peninsular India during the next five days.
Moreover, it stated that rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds were expected to continue over the Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains of Northwest India until Monday.
“Heavy rainfall spell accompanied with isolated thunderstorms/lightning very likely over Northeast India till 30 April 2024 and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the same region from 1 May,” it added.
