IMD heat wave update: Red alert issued for four states as mercury hits 45°C mark

The Indian Meteorological Department on Tuesday, April 30, issued a red alert for four states due to heatwave as mercury touched the 45°C mark. The states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha have been cautioned against extreme heatwave until May 2.
The IMD warned that areas under the red alert are at risk of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke, prompting government authorities to urge extreme caution among residents.
“Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions likely to continue over East India till May 2 and gradually abate thereafter,” IMD said in a release.
The weather department has also issued an orange alert for sub-Himalayan West Bengal, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, interior Karnataka, and Jharkhand.
In regions under orange alert, IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to heat or engage in heavy physical activities outdoors.
Meanwhile, severe heat wave was observed in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum with maximum temperature of 47.1°C.
Heat Wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed in most parts over Gangetic West Bengal, in some parts over Saurashtra, Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Odisha.
In addition, heat wave conditions in isolated pockets prevailed over Jharkhand, Telangana, Interior Karnataka, north Kerala, Konkan and Rayalaseema, the IMD said in a release.
“Heat wave conditions likely to continue over south Peninsular India during next 5 days,” the IMD added.

Heavy rainfall spell accompanied with thunderstorms and gusty winds very likely to continue over Northeast India during next 3-4 days, the IMD added.
“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya between April 30 and May 2 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during May 1-3; with isolated very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh on May 1 and May 2 and Mizoram and Tripura on May and isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely over Meghalaya on May 2,” the IMD said in a release.
