Delhi’s air quality deteriorates with AQI reaching 300 due to unfavourable meteorological conditions, says CAQM

The air quality in Delhi-NCR region touched a mark of 300, indicating very poor quality on Tuesday, May  7, as a result of unfavourable meteorological conditions, according to Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

In a post on social media platform on X said, “Taking note of the prevailing poor air quality scenario in Delhi-NCR, CAQM convened an urgent meeting today. Representative from IMD/IITM apprised that the avg. AQI of Delhi has touched 300 (‘Very Poor’ category) due to highly unfavorable meteorological conditions.”

Rapid changes in wind direction and speeds due to high convection rate along with absolute dry conditions leading to continued suspension of dust has been attributed as the reason for deteriorating air quality.

CAQM added, “Particulate matter load over the region has increased due to rapid changes in wind direction and speeds due to high convection rate and absolute dry conditions leading to continued suspension of dust and may not be attributed to any specific local sector.

All the agencies concerned to intensify actions for abatement of dust arising from various construction and demolition activities, linear projects and from roads, pathways or right of ways and open areas through various dust abatement measures prescribed by CAQM, it said further.

The air quality in Delhi was recorded above 280 or under the ‘poor category’. On Monday (May 6), the AQI stood at 247 around 4 pm which increased to 280 till 10 am on Tuesday.

Immediate relief is not expected in the next three days with the region likely to witness a dust storm late on Tuesday night, according to IMD.
