Apex Court directs implementation of minimum one-third women reservation in Supreme Court Bar Association posts

The Supreme Court on Thursday, May 2, directed the implementation of the minimum one-third reservation of posts for women in the Supreme Court Bar Association, including the 2024–2025 elections.
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan, directed that three out of nine executive members and two out of six senior executive members will be women. The post of treasurer to the Supreme Court Bar Association of India will also be reserved for women.
“In the ensuing elections for 2024–25, the post of Treasurer of the Supreme Court Bar Association is reserved for women,” the apex court ordered. The Court also clarified that this reservation will not preclude eligible female members from contesting for other posts.

According to the Court’s direction, one post of the office bearers of SCBA will be exclusively reserved for women by turn and on a rotation basis. They shall begin with the post of President for the 2024-25 elections.
As per the Court’s direction, the elections for the 2024–25 term will be held on May 16. This will be followed by the counting of votes on May 18 and the declaration of results on May 18. The election committee shall comprise Senior Advocates Jaideep Gupta, Rana Mukherjee and Meenakshi Arora.
The Court observed that the norms, eligibility conditions etc. of the SCBA cannot remain static for decades and timely reforms are needed. As a result, the Court has directed the executive committee of the SCBA to invite suggestions from all the members of the bar. The suggestions are to be given by July 19, 2024, either in digital or print form and subsequently placed before the apex court.
