With at least five other anime series, including Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Shinichirō Watanabe’s Lazarus, in development with both Bucchigiri?! and Oblivion Battery debuting this year, this revelation may not come as a surprise considering the studio’s heavy workload and lengthy delays.
Fans of Yuri!!! on Ice had already lost faith following remarks made by MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka last year. According to IGN India, in an interview, Otsuka cited a lack of funds produced by the series as the key reason for not focusing on the feature.

The first season of Yuri!!! on Ice debuted in 2016 and ran for 12 episodes. It centres on the timid figure skater named Yuri Katsuki and his pursuit of the Figure Skating Grand Prix. Following a heartbreaking defeat, Yuri first considers retirement, but he decides to give it another shot when his hero, the gifted and handsome Victor Nikiforov, knocks on his door and offers to tutor him. Romantic sentiments begin to bloom between the two along the road.
Victor’s adolescent years were planned to be highlighted in the film. Although his past was never fully explored in the anime, it was evident that his teenage years were characterised by rigorous training. There may not have been anything holding him in Russia because he is completely content to leave everything behind and follow Yuri.
Yuri!!! on Ice took home seven prizes at the first-ever Crunchyroll Anime Awards, three at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival and a Japan Character Award. The show has received accolades for portraying a same-sex relationship in a nation and sport where the topic is still controversial.
