PM Modi’s next target is zero electricity bill and wants solar panels in every household

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his next aim is to implement Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana so that no one has to pay electricity bills. In an interview with Network18 Group Editor Rahul Joshi, Modi said, “I want solar panels in every household.”

He elaborated on his three aims for ‘Vikshit Bharat’: Every household’s power bill should be zero, India should sell surplus electricity and earn money, and the country should become self-reliant in the energy sector.

Modi noted that the era of electric vehicles is here and there is a need to boost the energy sector. He expressed his desire for every individual with a scooter or car to have the capability to charge it at home using solar energy. “This means the transportation cost of ₹1,000-2,000 per month for the person should also become zero.”

This, he said will benefit citizens as well as the country. “The billions of dollars being spent on importing petroleum will stop. So, it’s a scheme with multiple benefits,” the PM said.

In February, Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana with an investment of over ₹75,000 crore, for installing solar rooftops for 10 million households. The solar power scheme seeks to offer 300 units of free electricity every month.

Here’s how to apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

Step 1: Register on the portal by selecting your state and electricity distribution company. Enter your electricity consumer number, mobile number and e-mail.

Step 2: Log in using your consumer number and mobile number. Apply for rooftop solar using the given form.

Step 3: Once you receive feasibility approval, the solar plant can be installed by any registered vendors in your discom.

Step 4: After installation, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.

Step 5: A commissioning certificate will be generated from the portal after net meter installation and discom inspection.

Step 6: Once you receive the commissioning report, submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. Your subsidy will be credited to your bank account within 30 days.
