You get back up, dust yourself off and move on, of course, Vikas Khemani, the founder of Carnelian Advisors and the former CEO of Edelweiss Securities Ltd, said, discussing handling professional failures.
During a recent episode of the CNBCTV-18 podcast, I Did It My Way, Khemani said that he decided to quit Edelweiss when he was at the helm. In response, he said, “My wife is a big inspiration for that. She said I always wanted to marry a businessman. And I said Okay.”
Khemani continued, saying that he had never been one to settle for a “cushy job” and that he had always wanted to launch his own business.
“All of a sudden when you are successful, ego builds.”
After leaving such a position, he claims, there is a “need to prove yourself.”
According to Khemani, he had certain thoughts in mind when he decided to resign as the top boss. However, all of his attempts “failed.”
He said that he attempted to purchase IDFC stocks, ILFS, and IDBI mutual funds, but that attempts were met with failure after failure and that Khemani was placed under “big pressure” since “it didn’t work out.”
He claimed he went through a relatively tough period for a year and a half. That’s when he understood he ought to get things started rather than waiting for “something to happen.” Given his extended social circle, he presumed that he would get financial support from them but 150–200 crores was the most he could manage.
“But that’s where I think ego reset happens and according to me it was one of best things to have happened to anyone,” he said.
