Summary

The flight carried 235 passengers and a crew of 14, United said. The airline said that the plane, built in 2002, was designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires.

A United Airlines jetliner bound for Japan made a safe landing in Los Angeles on Thursday after losing a tire while taking off from San Francisco.

Video shows the plane losing one of the six tires on its left-side main landing gear assembly seconds after takeoff. The tire landed in an employee parking lot at San Francisco International Airport, where it smashed into a car and shattered its back window before breaking through a fence and coming to stop in a neighboring lot.

No one was injured, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said in a statement.

Fire engines stood by at Los Angeles International Airport but weren’t needed, as the Boeing 777 made an uneventful landing and stopped about two-thirds of the way down a runway. Airport spokesman Dae Levine said the plane landed safely.

It was then towed away.

The flight carried 235 passengers and a crew of 14, United said. The airline said that the plane, built in 2002, was designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires. The passengers will be moved to another plane for the rest of the trip, United said.

Boeing 777s have six tires on each of the two main landing gears. Video of Flight 35 departing shows the plane losing one of the six tires on its left-side main landing gear assembly seconds after takeoff.

Aviation experts said planes losing tires is a rare occurrence and not indicative of a larger safety issue.

“In aviation, we never want to have single points of failure if they can be avoided, and this is a case in point,” said Alan Price, a former chief pilot for Delta Air Lines.

“The remaining tires are fully capable of handling the load,” he added.

Price said a loose tire is normally a maintenance issue and not a problem created by the manufacturer.

John Cox, a retired pilot and professor of aviation safety at the University of Southern California, agreed. “I don’t see any impact for Boeing as it was a United maintenance team that changed the tire,” he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate, spokesman Tony Molinaro said.

The airline said Wednesday that it will start flights from Newark, New Jersey, to Tel Aviv with a stop in Munich on March 2 and March 4. United said it hopes to begin daily service on March 6 and to add a second daily flight as soon as May.

United Airlines says it plans to resume flights to Israel next month, reviving a route that was suspended in October at the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The airline said Wednesday that it will start flights from Newark, New Jersey, to Tel Aviv with a stop in Munich on March 2 and March 4. United said it hopes to begin daily service on March 6 and to add a second daily flight as soon as May.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines also stopped flying to Tel Aviv after the war started and have not announced when service might resume. Germany’s Lufthansa and its affiliates Austrian Airlines and Swiss brought back flights to Tel Aviv in January, followed by Air France. Other European carriers have said they plan to restart flights to Israel this spring.

United said it conducted “a detailed safety analysis” and consulted security experts and government officials in both countries before deciding to resume the flights. The airline said it also worked with the two unions that represent its pilots and flight attendants.

The Chicago-based airline said it will evaluate whether to resume flights this fall to Israel from San Francisco, Chicago and Dulles airport outside Washington, D.C.

United flight diverted to Denver due to wing damage, FAA investigates

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

United said the Boeing 757-200 carrying 165 passengers landed in Denver to “address an issue with the slat” on one of its wings. Slats are moveable panels on the front or leading edge of the wing and are used during takeoffs and landings.

A United Airlines cross-country flight was cut short and the jetliner landed in Denver after one of its wings was damaged.

A passenger on the San Francisco-to-Boston flight Monday said he had just put in earbuds and started to doze off when he felt the plane shaking.

“All of a sudden I heard this violent vibration like I had never heard before,” Kevin Clarke said in an interview Tuesday.

Clarke said one of the pilots walked down the aisle of the main cabin, then returned to the cockpit and announced that the plane had minor damage to its right wing and the flight would be diverted to Denver.

Clarke opened his window shade and took video of the damage that was later broadcast on Boston 25 News. The 67-year-old, a ski-race announcer from Maine, was comforted that the pilot believed the plane was good enough to fly, but he began having doubts when the jet hit turbulence.

Clark began checking the wing repeatedly, until he decided that he just couldn’t look anymore.

“I was just going to pray that we made it to the other side of the turbulence,” he said.

United said the Boeing 757-200 carrying 165 passengers landed in Denver to “address an issue with the slat” on one of its wings. Slats are moveable panels on the front or leading edge of the wing and are used during takeoffs and landings. Chicago-based United did not say what caused the damage which left pieces of the slat torn away.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that it is investigating the incident.

The plane landed safely in Denver, and passengers were put on a different plane and arrived later in the day in Boston, according to the airline.

The incident comes at a time of heightened passenger jitters after last month’s blowout of a door panel on an Alaska Airlines jetliner flying over Oregon. The National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report that bolts designed to prevent the panel from moving were missing on the Boeing 737 Max 9 jet.

Alaska and United halt more flights amid Boeing’s quality investigation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun told that a “quality escape” was at issue in the MAX 9 cabin blowout that left a gaping hole in the plane that had been in service for just eight weeks, but added key questions remained.

Alaska Airlines said on Wednesday it would cancel all flights on 737 MAX 9 jets through Saturday as it continues to wait for regulatory approvals to resume flying after a cabin panel blowout Boeing suggested was caused by a “quality” issue.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Saturday grounded 171 Boeing jets installed with the same panel after the emergency landing, including Alaska Airlines’ 65 MAX 9s.

The move has forced the cancellation of about 20% of the Seattle-based airline’s daily schedule for five consecutive days and 150 flights for Thursday.

United Airlines, the other US 737 MAX 9 operator with 79 of the planes in its fleet, said it had canceled 167 flights on Wednesday and expected “significant” cancellations on Thursday as well.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg declined to say on Wednesday when the FAA may allow the planes to resume flights but said it would only be when safe.

“The only consideration on the timeline is safety,” Buttigieg told reporters. “Until it is ready, it is not ready. Nobody can or should be rushed in that process.”

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun told CNBC on Wednesday that a “quality escape” was at issue in the MAX 9 cabin blowout that left a gaping hole in the plane that had been in service for just eight weeks, but added key questions remained.

“What broke down in our gauntlet of inspections? What broke down in the original work that allowed for that escape to happen?” Calhoun said.

A quality escape was “a description of what people are finding in their inspections… anything that could potentially contribute to an accident,” he added.

Boeing on Tuesday told staff the findings were being treated as a “quality control issue” and checks were under way at Boeing and supplier Spirit AeroSystems, Reuters reported previously.

Calhoun said he had spoken to Buttigieg and FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker to ensure there was no repeat of the cabin panel blowout on any MAX 9 after Friday’s incident.

The grounding has rekindled frustration among airlines over the planemaker’s struggle to contain a series of safety and supply crises, industry officials and experts said.

INSPECTION INSTRUCTIONS NEEDED

Alaska Airlines and United said on Monday they had found loose parts on multiple grounded aircraft, raising new concerns among industry experts about how Boeing’s best-selling jet family is manufactured.

The carriers still need revised inspection and maintenance instructions from Boeing that must be approved by the FAA before they can begin flying the planes again.

“We will only return these aircraft to service when all findings have been fully resolved and meet all FAA and Alaska’s stringent standards,” Alaska Airlines said.

The International Association of Machinists (IAM), a union representing workers at fuselage maker Spirit and at Boeing’s factory in Renton, Washington that produces the 737, has been appointed a party to the US National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) investigation, an IAM spokesperson said on Wednesday evening.

The spokesperson did not provide further details. The NTSB confirmed the IAM’s involvement.

Spirit’s interim CEO Patrick Shanahan was in Seattle over the weekend at Boeing’s invitation in a crisis room “listening to all of what we are trying to collect in the production process, taken it back to his team, interrogating their processes, alongside of our people,” Calhoun said.

Spirit said on Wednesday a company team was now supporting the NTSB’s investigation directly, adding it remained “focused on the quality of each aircraft structure that leaves our facilities.”

The NTSB is focusing in part on whether the recovered cabin panel that blew off had been properly attached.

Buttigieg said he told Calhoun how important it was for Boeing to address the issue in the MAX 9 and to ensure every plane it delivered was “100% safe.”

Buttigieg said the FAA “will continue with a very, very strict level of oversight” to ensure that.

The transportation secretary said he had also spoken to the United and Alaska Airlines CEOs and they agreed to take care of passengers whose flights have been canceled because of the grounding.

Buttigieg said the dramatic photos of the gaping hole led him to think what he would have done in that circumstance, which NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy described as “terrifying”.

“I was on a plane a day or two later, with my two-year-old son sitting in the window seat next to me,” Buttigieg said. “No passengers should go through what those passengers went through.”

Boeing CEO admits ‘our mistake’ after 737 Max 9 door blowout

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“We’re going to approach this — No. 1 — acknowledging our mistake,” CEO Dave Calhoun told Boeing employees on Tuesday, January 9 (local time), during a companywide meeting at its 737 factory near Seattle. “We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way.”

Boeing Co Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun said the planemaker must own up to its shortcomings as it grapples with a safety incident that has renewed questions over the quality of its manufacturing.

“We’re going to approach this — No. 1 — acknowledging our mistake,” Calhoun told Boeing employees on Tuesday, January 9 (local time), during a companywide meeting at its 737 factory near Seattle. “We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way.”

The remarks came during an all-hands meeting called by Calhoun to reinforce safety as the company’s top priority after a door plug ejected from a 737 Max 9 last week mid-flight, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the plane. He and other senior Boeing leaders addressed employees from its Renton, Washington, factory where the 737 is assembled, and webcast their remarks to workers at other locations.

“I’ve got kids, I’ve got grandkids and so do you,” he said as he recalled seeing photographs of the plane’s damaged fuselage. “This stuff matters. Every detail matters.”

US regulators grounded 171 of Boeing’s 737 Max 9 aircraft and ordered inspections after the Jan. 5 accident. None of the 177 passengers and crew onboard Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 were injured when the panel ripped free shortly after the plane departed from Portland, Oregon.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal, tasked with raising output while also maintaining quality at Boeing’s largest unit, spoke alongside Calhoun at Tuesday’s presentation. Also addressing workers was Chief Safety Officer Mike Delaney, whose senior executive role was created during a previous crisis involving the US planemaker’s cash-cow Max jet: a global grounding after two fatal crashes killed a combined 346 people nearly five years ago.

Calhoun had told employees earlier that the all-hands meeting would focus on Boeing’s “response to this accident, and reinforcing our focus on and our commitment to safety, quality, integrity and transparency.”

Much is at stake for Calhoun and for Boeing after a series of quality issues tripped up production of Boeing’s most important aircraft last year. The accident last week complicates the CEO’s work to rebuild Boeing’s image after the crashes and a prolonged grounding of the 737 Max.

Alaska Air Group Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc. have both discovered other 737 Max 9 jets with loose bolts after the Federal Aviation Administration grounded the Max 9 and ordered carriers to inspect the planes. Formal inspections have yet to start — the agency said Tuesday that Boeing is revising instructions for the checks after receiving feedback, and all of the affected planes will remain idled until the regulator deems them safe.

Alaska was still awaiting inspection and maintenance instructions from Boeing and the FAA’s approval of the procedures as of 6:30 p.m. Eastern time, the carrier said on in a statement on social media platform X.

“It seems to be a bit of a moving target,” Savanthi Syth, a Raymond James analyst, said of final instructions for the inspection process. “I can appreciate the FAA’s perspective on this with the other Max issues, where they were a little too quick to say, ‘This is fine.’ They’re really trying to cross the T’s and dot the I’s on this one.”

A chorus of airline chiefs, including two of Boeing’s biggest customers — Ryanair Holdings Plc’s Michael O’Leary and Emirates’ Tim Clark in Dubai — have spoken publicly of the need for Boeing to raise quality standards.

“They’ve had quality control problems for a long time now, and this is just another manifestation of that,” Clark said in an interview this week in Dubai. “I think they’re getting their act together now, but this doesn’t help.”

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said Monday that her agency would consider broadening the probe. Such a move would bring deeper scrutiny for Boeing and its manufacturing processes, and magnify issue as the US planemaker seeks to get the aircraft back into service.

Calhoun, 66, took over as CEO of Boeing at the start of 2020 after the board ousted then-CEO Dennis Muilenburg for mishandling the grounding crisis. He canceled an annual offsite retreat for senior executives that was planned for this week in response to the Alaska incident.

The panel that broke loose from Flight 1282 covered an opening on the Max 9 that can be used for emergency exits. Some airlines, including United and Alaska, cover them up because the doors aren’t needed for lower-density seat configurations.

“We do see the latest incident as eroding the fragile confidence that has been built around the 737 Max franchise,” Ron Epstein, an analyst with Bank of America, told clients over the weekend. “In our view, Boeing needs to tread carefully and cautiously through this potential reputational minefield.”

Boeing takes first step to ungrounding the 737 Max 9 after mishap

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Boeing shares fell 8% in New York, their biggest decline since October 2022. Supplier Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc., which makes the fuselage for the 737, slid 11%.

Boeing Co. took the first step toward returning its grounded 737 Max 9 jetliners to service, issuing guidance to airlines on what inspections are needed to prevent another midair fuselage blowout like the one on Alaska Airlines late last week.

Before the Federal Aviation Administration will allow the planes to return to the air, carriers must “complete enhanced inspections which include both left and right cabin door exit plugs, door components, and fasteners,” the FAA said in a statement. “Operators must also complete corrective action requirements based on findings from the inspections prior to bringing any aircraft back into service.”

Alaska Air Group Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc., the two biggest operators of the Max 9 variant, had earlier parked those aircraft after the Jan. 5 accident, canceling hundreds of flights.

On Monday, United said it found loose bolts in multiple 737 Max jets after it began preliminary inspections on Saturday. But the carrier said it couldn’t yet carry out the final inspections needed to return the jets to service since it’s awaiting final sign-off on the full inspection process. The work will likely be more intensive than US regulators first signaled. United said it expects to have teams of five technicians working for “several hours” on each aircraft, although the length of timing required won’t be clear until the airline’s mechanics have completed work on more aircraft.

The Alaska Airlines mishap occurred when a door-shaped panel ripped out as Flight 1282 climbed out of Portland, Oregon. The aircraft reached an altitude of about 16,000 feet before turning around and landing back in Portland about 20 minutes after takeoff. No one was seriously injured, an outcome National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said was pure luck.

Boeing shares fell 8% in New York, their biggest decline since October 2022. Supplier Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc., which makes the fuselage for the 737, slid 11%.

As Boeing contends with the latest blow to the reputation of its cash cow Max family, Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun canceled an annual executive retreat that was to have begun on Monday. Boeing leaders urged employees to tune in to an all-hands safety meeting to be webcast on Tuesday from the Renton factory where the 737 jets are built.

Stan Deal, Boeing’s commercial airplanes chief, and Mike Delaney, the company’s chief safety officer, urged staff to ask “ourselves what we can do individually and collectively to make safety and first-time quality the priority in all aspects of our business.”

The two executives sent employees a message confirming that the multi-operator message had been shared with airlines. They noted that the assembly of the door plug that’s being inspected is not found on other jets in the 737 Max family.

The latest incident, coming after a series of manufacturing and quality lapses at Boeing, erodes the nascent confidence that has been building around the company’s workhorse single-aisle jet, Bank of America analyst Ron Epstein said.

“In our view, Boeing needs to tread carefully and cautiously through this potential reputational minefield,” he said in a note to clients on Sunday. “Some scrutiny must be saved for regulators as well, as the FAA is ultimately responsible for certificating these aircraft before delivery.”

Revellers plan to celebrate New Year’s Eve twice, but were left miffed

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

After ringing in the New Year in Guam on December 31, 2023, some revellers were to take a flight on January 1 at 7.35 am for Honolulu, where they would arrive on December 31 itself by 6.50 am.

Just imagine you plan to celebrate New Years eve twice the same day. Sounds like you’ll need to time travel for that right? Well, actually it is possible to ring in the new year twice on the same day and there were some daredevils who even tried to do it, but it was an unfortunate turn of events for them — don’t worry they’re all safe — that they couldn’t reach their destination on time to celebrate the second round of New Years eve.

After ringing in the New Year in Guam on December 31, 2023, some revellers were to take a flight on January 1 at 7.35 am for Honolulu, where they would arrive on December 31 itself by 6.50 am. That’s cause the time zone changes.

According to CNN, Flight UA200, operated by United Airlines was initially set to depart Guam at 7.35 am on January 1, 2024, and arrive in Honolulu, Hawaii at 6.50 pm on December 31, 2023. The airline promised passengers a unique time-travel experience, allowing them to celebrate New Year’s Eve twice. United Airlines had tweeted, “You only live once, but you can celebrate New Year’s Eve twice!”

The concept of time zone hopping for New Year’s Eve celebrations is not new, with select flights offering passengers the opportunity to usher in the New Year more than once.

However, UA200 didn’t live up to the excitementas the flight was delayed and when it finally took off Guam at 1.50 pm on January 1, it landed in Honolulu past 12.30 am on the same day, thus missing out on the anticipated double New Year’s countdown. Miffed, passengers took to X to express their disappointment.

One individual said, “Great idea, too bad it got delayed! I was supposed to be on this flight. Double new year isn’t happening anymore.” Another user wrote: “I booked this flight specifically so I could do this. I got a delay notification, and we aren’t scheduled to get in until 1/1.”

Nonetheless, some passengers on other flights experienced the joy of ringing in 2024 twice. Cathay Pacific’s flight CX872, departed from Hong Kong just past 1 am on January 1 and arrived in San Francisco at 8 pm on December 31. Similarly, All Nippon Airways’ flight NH106, departing Tokyo post 12 am on January 1, touched down in Los Angeles at around 5 pm on December 31.

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Francisco Severo Torres was arrested at Boston Logan International airport after he allegedly tried to stab a flight attendant in the neck and tampered with the aircraft door mid-flight. The incident took place about 45 minutes prior to landing.

A United Airlines passenger was arrested after he allegedly tried to open the emergency exit mid-flight and then allegedly tried to stab a flight attendant. The shocking incident took place during a flight from Los Angeles to Boston, US on Sunday.

Francisco Severo Torres, 33, a resident of Leominster, was tackled and restrained with the help of passengers aboard the United Flight 2609 flight and arrested at Boston Logan International Airport when the flight landed.

Torres told the police during questioning that he broke a metal spoon “to make a weapon,” as he believed a flight attendant of the airline was trying to kill him, so he tried to kill him first, according to court records cited in an ABC news report.

What happened on the United Airlines flight?

The incident took place about 45 minutes prior to landing. The flight crew was alerted about a disarmed door between the first class and coach sections and a flight attendant found that the door’s locking handle had been moved out of the fully locked position, the records said.

Torres had allegedly tried to open the door but was unsuccessful. So, he tried to open the emergency exit door and jump out of the plane.

The flight attendant secured the door and emergency slide and alerted the captain and flight crew.

Another flight attendant reported that he saw Torres near the door and believed Torres had tampered with it. He then confronted Torres about it.

As per the statement, Torres allegedly responded by asking if there were cameras showing that he had done so.

Explained: What are the supersonic jets that American Airlines is betting on?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Post the 2003 Concorde tragedy, supersonic passenger travel has been lying low for quite some time. Now, NASA, and companies like Boom, Virgin Galactic, Lockheed Martin and others are working on bringing back supersonic jets to the skies; and US airlines like American Airlines (and earlier United Airlines) are placing orders. Find out all about supersonic travel, its past and about-to-Boom future.

American Airlines will buy up to 20 supersonic Overture planes from aircraft maker Boom Supersonic. With this, American Airlines becomes the second major US airline to bet on supersonic passenger travel after United Airlines made a similar commitment to buy 15 Overture jets in 2021.

As part of the deal, American Airlines has put down a non-refundable deposit on the planes and also retained options for 40 more Boom Overture flights.

The revival of interest in supersonic commercial jet travel comes nearly two decades since the world last witnessed commercial supersonic flight Concorde, flown by Air France and British Airways. The Concorde was retired after 27 years of service in 2003 following a deadly crash and high costs of fuel and maintenance.

The Overture, which is still on the drawing board and years away from flying, is a supersonic jet which promises to take passengers from London to New York in about three and a half hours.

What is a supersonic jet?

A supersonic jet is an aircraft that travels faster than the speed of sound. This means that the jet will move faster than 660mph (1,060km/h) at an altitude of 60,000ft (18,300m). Typically, a passenger jet flies at a speed of 560mph (900km/h).

Also read: Business travel recovery to be delayed until 2026 due to inflation and labor shortage

The Overture is a supersonic jet which is said to fly at twice the speed of subsonic commercial jets that are used now. The supersonic jet will come with an extra engine, contoured fuselage and gull wings.

According to Boom, the Overture will fly as fast as Mach 1.7, or 1,304 mph. This will dramatically decrease the time of trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights. Over land, these planes will fly 20 percent faster than subsonic flights.

With the Overture, a flight from Seattle to Tokyo, which usually takes around 10 hours, would be done in six hours.

The supersonic planes will be able to carry 65-80 passengers and also fly on sustainable aviation fuel, bringing down emissions, Boom said.

Supersonic in the recent past

The Concorde, which flew at a speed of Mach 2.04, was even faster than the Boom jets. The Concorde flew its first supersonic flight in 1976 from New York City to London in three hours. The last commercial flight touched the skies in 2003. There were a number of reasons why the Concorde was discontinued, including the high operational and fuel expense.

Although the Concorde earned a place in history, the Soviet Union’s Tupolev Tu-144 made its maiden flight two months before it in 1968. However, production of the plane was quietly halted before the programme was finally grounded in 1984.

Pros and cons of supersonic jets

One of the biggest benefits is that supersonic jets bring down travel time. However, two of its primary concerns are noise and pollution. The Boom got its name from the sonic boom caused by the plane travelling faster than the speed of sound. The sonic boom can be heard on the ground like a loud explosion or thunderclap. To check the boom, planes have to be flown at a lower speed till they are out over the ocean and away from the populated areas. As a result, the noise limits the areas where these planes can fly.

Another big concern is the high fuel consumption of such jets.

“In order to fly supersonic, you will need more power, you will need more fuel,” BBC quoted Kathy Savitt, Chief Commercial Officer of Boom, as saying. However, the Overture is expected to be operated as a “net-zero carbon aircraft,” Savitt said.

The supersonic jet builders

While Boom plans to roll out its supersonic jets in 2025 and carry its first passengers by 2029, a number of other companies are also working on supersonic airliner projects. US space agency NASA is developing a “quiet” supersonic jet, called the X-59. The agency plans to pass on the tech to the commercial sector. However, its first prototype is yet to take flight and the first test is not expected until later this year.

Lockheed Martin has been collaborating with NASA on the project X-59 QueSST in the past decade. The company plans to test the X-59 and begin designing the QSTA by 2023.

Exosonic plans to make a 70-seat Mach 1.8 passenger plane. In September 2020, the company won a contract from the US Air Force Presidential and Executive Airlift Directorate, which runs the United States’ presidential and executive airlift fleet.

Spike Aerospace, founded by Indian-origin American Vik Kachoria, had earlier promised to operate the supersonic jet by 2018. It plans to bring in a low-boom, Mach 1.6 capable aircraft that can carry 12-18 passengers.

Virgin Galactic is partnering Rolls-Royce to develop a supersonic jet.

When can these flights become a reality?

As yet, Boom does not have an engine manufacturer lined up and is in talks with Rolls Royce and others.

For the supersonic jets to become a reality, these need to be approved by foreign regulators and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which regulates commercial airlines. However, it is still unclear when these flights will get approval.

With the US government keen on reviving supersonic jets, the FAA is working to establish new rules of the road for such aircraft, said the regulator’s website.

United Airlines to start daily flights from Bengaluru to San Francisco by end of 2022

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Kempegowda Airport stated that it has witnessed robust growth in international flight operations, connecting 23 international destinations in May 2022 — the highest in southern India.

United Airlines is scheduled to begin daily flights from Bengaluru to San Francisco in the last quarter of 2022, according to Kempegowda International Airport. Australian national carrier Qantas will begin four weekly flights to Sydney from September 14, the airport said in a statement on Monday while giving an update on the international flight operations.

Two weekly flights to Tel Aviv (Air India) and daily flights to Seattle (American Airlines) are also planned in the near future, it said. Additionally, new routes launched a few months before the outbreak of the pandemic have already been re-connected.

Addis Ababa, (connected by Ethiopian Airlines), Amsterdam (by KLM), and Tokyo Narita (by Japan Airlines) have been reinstated from Bengaluru, it said. Japan Airlines will increase frequency to Tokyo Narita to thrice a week, effective August this year, and KLM plans to further increase frequency on the Bengaluru-Amsterdam route from the current three weekly frequencies to four-times-a-week beginning next month.

The Kempegowda airport said it has witnessed robust growth in international flight operations, connecting 23 international destinations in May 2022 — the highest in south India. The airport witnessed 15 percent higher international Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) per day between March and April this year while May alone saw 48 percent growth in ATMs.

Additionally, average daily international traffic increased to 9,300 passengers by the fourth week of May, compared to 6,500 in April and 5,500 in March, the statement added.
