Summary

In a video statement on Friday, the 42-year-old said she was in the early stages of treatment and added that the cancer diagnosis was a “huge shock”.

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun chemotherapy. The 42-year-old described the past two months as ‘incredibly tough’ for her entire family.

In a video statement on Friday, the 42-year-old said she was in the early stages of treatment and added that the cancer diagnosis was a ‘huge shock,’ BBC reported.

However, the wife of Prince William, Britain’s heir to the throne, sent a positive message and said, “I am well and getting stronger every day.”

It was further explained that she had a major abdominal surgery in January, but until then it was not known that there was any cancer.

While no details of the cancer have been disclosed yet, the Kensington Palace stated it was confident she would make a full recovery.

“However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” she stated.

The Princess of Wales’ chemotherapy treatment started late last month. No further private medical information, including the type of cancer, has been shared yet.

In the message, Kate further shared that she and her husband, Prince William, needed time to explain the situation to their three children — George, Charlotte and Louis.

“This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she stated.

King Charles ‘proud’ of Kate

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson on Friday said Britain’s King Charles was proud of Kate for her courage in speaking about her treatment.

The spokesperson said Charles is “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did,” adding that he has “remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks” after they spent time in hospital together, Reuters reported.

Kate has ‘love and support’ of the whole UK

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the Princess of Wales has the “love and support of the whole country as she continues her recovery”.

In a statement on X, Sunak said Kate has shown “tremendous bravery with her statement.”

“In recent weeks she has been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media,” Sunak said and added that when it comes to matters of health, Kate must be “afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her loving family.”

What Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who resigned from their roles as working royals in 2020 and currently reside in California, in a statement said, “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they can do so privately and in peace”.

We love you, says White House

“Jill and I join millions around the world in praying for your full recovery, Princess Kate,” said US President Joe Biden on X.

Earlier, the US First Lady wrote on the social media site, “You are brave, and we love you.”

Prince Harry withdraws libel claim against British tabloid

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Harry, King Charles’ younger son, had sued Associated Newspapers over a 2022 article which stated he only offered to pay for police protection after bringing a separate legal fight against the British government.

Britain’s Prince Harry on Friday withdrew his libel claim against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday newspaper over an article about his security arrangements, with his spokesperson saying he wanted to focus on his family’s safety.
Harry, King Charles’ younger son, had sued Associated Newspapers over a 2022 article which stated he only offered to pay for police protection after bringing a separate legal fight against the British government.
The report also accused Harry, 39, of attempting to mislead the public about his willingness to pay for the policing, which was withdrawn after he stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
In December, he lost his attempt to have the paper’s defence to his libel lawsuit thrown out, meaning he would have likely had to give evidence at London’s High Court later this year.
The Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday’s sister title, reported that Harry, the Duke of Sussex, had abandoned his case hours before his lawyers were required to hand over relevant documents.
The paper said he would now be obliged to pay the paper’s costs of 250,000 pounds ($316,900.00) along with his own fees which it put at 500,000 pounds. Both Harry’s lawyer and a spokesperson for Associated declined to comment.
The prince’s spokesperson, who said the legal costs had not been determined, said he had withdrawn the claim because he wanted to focus on the safety of his family and his case against the British government over the decision to strip him of automatic police protection when he was in Britain.
Harry, his U.S. wife Meghan and their two children now live in California after the couple stepped down from royal duties in 2020. His claim against the government was heard in December with a ruling expected in the next few months.
That case was Harry’s focus and not the libel action which would “give a continued platform to the Mail’s false claims all those years ago”, the spokesperson said.
London’s High Court had ruled last July that the Mail report was defamatory – paving the way for Harry to take the case forward against one of Britain’s biggest media publishers. But his bid to have the case decided in his favour without a trial then subsequently failed.
The legal action was one of a number of cases the royal is taking against British tabloids at the High Court. He and six other high-profile figures including singer Elton John are also suing Associated alleging widespread unlawful behaviour including phone-hacking by its journalists.
A judge ruled in November that their case could go to trial after the publisher tried to have it thrown out.

Prince Harry awarded £140,600 in phone-hacking lawsuit against Mirror newspapers

Summary

The prince – who became the first senior royal to appear as a witness in court for 130 years at the trial in June – had sued MGN, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Britain’s Prince Harry was awarded 140,600 pounds ($180,743) after London’s High Court ruled on Friday he had been a victim of “modest” phone-hacking and other unlawful information gathering by journalists at Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).

The prince – who became the first senior royal to appear as a witness in court for 130 years at the trial in June – had sued MGN, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Harry said he was targeted by MGN for 15 years from 1996 and that more than 140 stories which appeared in its papers were the result of unlawful information gathering, though the trial only considered 33 of these.

Of those the judge found unlawful actions had contributed to 15 articles during a period when he concluded that there had been extensive phone-hacking and widespread unlawful actions at the newspapers, of which some executives and in-house lawyers were aware.

Prince Harry is likely to return to the UK on eve of Queen Elizabeth’s first death anniversary

Summary

Harry, a long-time patron of UK charity WellChild, will attend its annual awards ceremony in London on Sept. 7 to mark the achievements of seriously ill young people, as reported by AP.

Prince Harry is expected to return to the United Kingdom next month to attend a charity awards ceremony on the eve of the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the charity WellChild said Thursday.

Harry, a long-time patron of UK charity WellChild, will attend its annual awards ceremony in London on Sept 7 to mark the achievements of seriously ill young people. He is not expected to be joined by his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

The royal withdrew from the same charity awards ceremony last year, which took place on Sept. 8, the day that Elizabeth, his grandmother, died.

She died at Balmoral, her beloved Scottish country estate, at 96 years old after reigning for 70 years. Harry, who had flown in from the United States, flew to Scotland to be with other members of the royal family.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are expected to mark the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death privately at Balmoral.

WellChild supports children and young people with long-term medical needs. Its annual awards event aims to highlight their challenges and recognize the caregivers who support them.

Harry is expected to mingle with winners at a reception before delivering a speech and presenting one of the awards.

Harry and Meghan will also reportedly attend the Invictus Games, the international sporting competition that Harry founded for wounded military personnel and veterans, which opens in Dusseldorf, Germany, on Sept. 9.

The couple, who married in May 2018, stepped down as senior royals and moved to North America in 2020. They are now based in California.

Prince Harry cross-examined over phone hacking claims in UK

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Prince Harry has accused the tabloid newspapers of inciting hatred against him as a young royal and casting him as a thicko, cheat, underage drinker and irresponsible drug taker referring to some of the media labels he felt associated with over the years.

Britain’s Prince Harry on Wednesday faced stern cross-examination at the high court here from the barrister representing the Mirror Group Newspapers over the royal’s claims that its publications obtained stories related to his private life by unlawful means, including phone hacking.

On the second day of his witness statement, the 38-year-old Duke of Sussex was taken through the articles narrowed down for the purpose of the legal case and questioned at length over why he believes they were obtained unlawfully.

It included articles referring to his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy and his military career serving in Afghanistan. Harry told the court that he was convinced that “phone hacking was on an industrial scale” and that he “would feel an injustice if it wasn’t accepted”.

The newspaper group’s barrister, Andrew Green, suggested the royal is in the realms of speculation and challenged him on claims that his ex-girlfriend’s phone was being hacked at the time. Taking him through the various articles published in the group’s Daily Mirror’, Sunday Mirror’, and Sunday People’ titles, Green cast doubts over Harry’s claims and also raised the issue of some stories being in the public interest.

Harry countered to suggest that stories about injuries he has suffered could only be of public interest if it was life-threatening. It follows his wide-ranging allegations of utterly vile unlawful information gathering on Tuesday when Prince Harry became the first senior royal in over 130 years to give evidence in a high court trial.

He accused the tabloid newspapers of inciting hatred against him as a young royal and casting him as a thicko, cheat, underage drinker and irresponsible drug taker referring to some of the media labels he felt associated with over the years. “It was a downward spiral, whereby the tabloids would constantly try and coax me, a ‘damaged’ young man, into doing something stupid that would make a good story and sell lots of newspapers. Looking back on it now, such behaviour on their part is utterly vile,” he told the court, presided over by Justice Timothy Fancourt.

Harry, who stepped back as a working royal and now lives in the US with wife Meghan Markle and his two children Archie and Lilibet, flew in over the weekend to give evidence in the trial. The royal said he decided to go to court to hold people to account for what they have done and that he was “determined to get to the bottom of it once and for all.

His legal action forms part of a representative case against MGN, which denies the allegations. The Prince alleges around 140 articles published between 1996 and 2010 contained information gathered using unlawful methods and, according to court reports, 33 of these have been selected to be considered at the trial.

Prince Harry to become first British royal in 130 years to give evidence in court

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

It will be the first time a senior royal has given evidence since Edward VII testified as a witness in part of a divorce case in 1870 and 20 years later in a slander trial over a card game, both before he became king.

Prince Harry will become the first senior British royal to give evidence in court for 130 years when he testifies next week in his lawsuit against a newspaper group he accuses of unlawful behaviour.

Harry, King Charles’ younger son, will appear in the witness box at London’s High Court as part of the case he and more than 100 other celebrities and high-profile figures have brought against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

It will be the first time a senior royal has given evidence since Edward VII testified as a witness in part of a divorce case in 1870 and 20 years later in a slander trial over a card game, both before he became king.

Harry, who is fifth-in-line to the throne, has barely been out of the headlines in the last six months over his legal rows with the British press and the release of his memoir and Netflix documentary series in which he accused other senior royals of colluding with tabloid newspapers.

His appearance in court is likely to attract worldwide attention.

David Yelland, a senior communications adviser and a former editor of Rupert Murdoch’s Sun tabloid newspaper – a publication Harry is also suing – said the royal family had long sought to avoid court cases, because they were not in control of the situation.

“These cases are often a case of mutually assured destruction. I don’t think anyone will get out looking great,” he said.

More than 100 people are suing MGN, with Harry and three others selected as test cases.

The trial, which began last month, has been told MGN journalists or private investigators commissioned by them carried out phone-hacking on an “industrial scale”, and committed other unlawful acts to obtain information about the prince and the other claimants.

This was done with the knowledge and approval of senior editors and executives, the claimants’ lawyer David Sherborne has said. MGN is contesting the allegations and says senior figures denied knowing anything about hacking and had any wrongdoing concealed from them.

‘ULTIMATE INTERVIEW’

The court was told by a journalist and biographer of Harry that one of those who knew about hacking was former editor Piers Morgan, now one of Britain’s most high-profile broadcasters and an outspoken critic of the prince and his wife Meghan.

Morgan, who has denied any involvement in unlawful behaviour and has accused Harry of invading his own family’s privacy, left his job as a presenter on a TV breakfast show after making outspoken remarks about Meghan.

“It’s hard to escape the notion that he’s using the courts, because he knows that when he is in the witness box, he will be believed,” Yelland said. “It is the ultimate interview to be cross-examined by a hostile barrister in the witness box.”

At the start of the trial, MGN, now owned by Reach, apologised in court documents and admitted that on one occasion the Sunday People had unlawfully sought information about Harry and that he was entitled to compensation.

But it has rejected his other allegations, saying he had no evidence for his claims. Instead, Buckingham Palace is likely to feature prominently in Harry’s cross-examination, with MGN arguing that some information had come from royal aides.

MGN’s documents say one story about Harry came when his father’s former deputy private secretary and Morgan were having “regular meals and drinking sessions together”.

Harry has said that his family and their aides had been complicit in leaking negative stories to protect or enhance their own reputations. The palace has not commented.

This week’s appearance will be the second time this year that Harry has attended the High Court in London, after joining singer Elton John and others for hearings in March over their lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily and Sunday Mail tabloids.

Harry and more than 100 other people are suing MGN, publisher of the Daily Mirror, the Sunday Mirror and the Sunday People tabloids. (Image: Shutterstock)
The lawsuit accuses MGN of widespread unlawful activities between 1991 and 2011. Those involved include actors, sports stars, celebrities and people who simply had a connection to high-profile figures. (Image: Reuters)
They say journalists or private investigators commissioned by MGN carried out phone-hacking on an “industrial scale”, obtained their private details by deception and carried out other illicit acts to find out information about them. (Image: Shutterstock)
Senior editors and executives knew and approved of the behaviour, according to the claimants’ lawyers. MGN is contesting the claims and denies senior figures were aware of wrongdoing. It also argues some of the lawsuits were brought too late. (Image: Shutterstock)

His lawyers said the intrusion led to the breakdown of his relationship with his long-term girlfriend Chelsy Davy. (Image: Reuters)
In other documents released at the outset of the trial, MGN admitted there was evidence that private investigators had been instructed to unlawfully gather information about three of those involved in the test cases, including Harry. (Image: Shutterstock)

Prince Harry is attending King Charles Coronation; all about where he will be seated & his role in ceremony

Summary

Charles’s younger son Harry and his American wife Meghan quit royal duties in 2020 and have since unleashed a string of barbed attacks on the monarchy

Prince Harry, who is attending his father King Charles III Coronation on Saturday, will be seated ten rows behind the rest of the senior royals, a royal associate has said.

Paul Burrel has said that the prince will make a quick exit at the May 6 coronation amid the ongoing feud between the royals.

Reports said that Prince Harry along with Uncle Andrew will have no formal role in the proceedings and remain out in the cold.

The royal associate further said that there is “no chance of reconciliation” and the Duke of Sussex will “be in and out in a flash.”

“It is not a surprise, he is coming to show face. He is coming to put his foot in the door and he is coming because his father wants him to be there,” Paul Burrel said while speaking to GB News.

He said that Harry sitting in the tenth row may be a blessing to him as he will be well-poised for a quick getaway.

“His father will be delighted that both his sons will be there to witness this incredible day in his life,” Burrel said adding that Harry “is not going to hang around.”

According to a report in The Independent, Prince William will also have “no interest” in speaking to Prince Harry during the coronation.

Buckingham Palace last month said Prince Harry will attend the coronation, ending months of speculation about whether the prince would be welcome at the Royal event.

Harry will not be accompanied by his wife Meghan who will stay at home in California with their children.

Harry’s attendance is seen as particularly sensitive since the publication of his blockbuster memoir “Spare” in January. In the explosive autobiography, the 38-year-old prince claimed his elder brother Prince William attacked him during an argument about Meghan, an American former television actress.

Harry is fifth in line to the throne, following his brother Prince William, and William’s three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis of Wales.

Meghan has remained in California with the children, thereby avoiding potentially awkward interactions with her in-laws.
