Summary

India and UAE have signed a bilateral investment treaty today. Key MoUs ranging from interlinking instant payment platforms and boosting cooperation on energy security and trade were signed as well.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Abu Dhabi marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between India and the UAE. This visit, part of the UAE-Qatar leg, is the seventh by Prime Minister Modi to the UAE since 2014.

The focus of the visit has been on fortifying trade agreements, renewing bilateral investment treaties, and enhancing technological cooperation.

One of the key achievements during the visit is the renewal of the 10-year-old bilateral investment treaty between India and the UAE. This treaty plays a crucial role in protecting investments made by companies from both nations.

The renewal not only safeguards existing investments but also fosters confidence among investors, potentially leading to increased investment flows between the two countries.

Addressing the need for seamless cross-border transactions, Prime Minister Modi’s visit has resulted in the interlinking of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the UAE’s Application of AANI. This integration will facilitate smoother and more efficient cross-border payment mechanisms, benefiting businesses and individuals engaged in international transactions.

Another noteworthy development is the agreement to interlink India’s RuPay cards with UAE’s JAYWAN card. This collaboration will enable the usage of RuPay cards in the UAE, enhancing financial connectivity between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit has resulted in the signing of eight agreements, reflecting the commitment to strengthening various aspects of bilateral cooperation. These agreements encompass a wide range of areas, including boosting digital public infrastructure and enhancing collaboration in the electronics sector.

India-Maldives ties: Former Envoy urges nuanced approach amid strain in diplomatic relations

Summary

Addressing concerns about the impact on tourism, Abdullah Ghiyas, President of the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, expressed regret over the incident. Contrary to media portrayals, he indicated that there haven’t been widespread cancellations, but there is a noticeable slowdown in bookings and a decrease in interest in visiting the Maldives.

Diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives escalated recently following derogatory remarks made by three deputy Maldivian ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ministers took it to the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, criticising PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, which eventually led to their sacking from their posts.

The incident unfolded when Prime Minister Modi, in a social media post about his visit to Lakshadweep, emphasised the stunning beauty of its islands without mentioning the Maldives.

Social media users in the Maldives interpreted this omission as a potential threat to their tourism industry, leading to the posting of derogatory remarks.

In response to the growing discord, the High Commissioner of the Maldives to India engaged in discussions with officials at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Ties between the two nations have been strained since Mohammed Moizzu’s anti-India campaign played a pivotal role in his victory in the presidential polls.

The Maldivian Ambassador to India was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs, expressing strong resentment towards the derogatory remarks. The Maldivian government issued a statement distancing itself from the comments made by the three deputy ministers, clarifying that their views did not represent the official stance of the Maldivian government.

Dyaneshwar M Mulay, the former Indian Envoy to the Maldives, shared his insights on the situation, characterising the ministers as “not very matured.” Mulay highlighted the complexity of the India-Maldives partnership, spanning political, economic, and people-to-people relations, including tourism, health-related tourism, investments, and educational exchanges.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Mulay emphasised the need for a nuanced understanding of the strong relationship between India and the Maldives, despite current challenges. He stated, “At the foundation, we have a very strong partnership, and it’s multi-dimensional.”

Ghiyas reassured that the sentiments expressed by the ministers do not reflect the views of everyday Maldivians, emphasizing the robust and enduring relationship between the two countries. He stated, “We believe that the relationship we have with India is much stronger than what is portrayed today in the last 24 to 48 hours.”

Rajasthan polls: PM Modi to lead BJP campaign with roadshow in Jaipur today evening

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Days ahead of Rajasthan assembly polls on November 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election campaign on Tuesday, with rallies in Bikaner and a roadshow in Jaipur on Tuesday evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday targeted the ruling Congress party in Rajasthan, calling it a symbol of corruption, nepotism, and appeasement—three evils preventing India from becoming a developed nation.

Addressing a BJP campaign rally in Rajasthan’s Baran district, the PM Modi said that Congress leaders are unruly and the people of the state are suffering as the ruling party has handed them over to robbers, rioters and criminals.

“As long as three enemies of the country—corruption, nepotism, and appeasement—are among us, it will be difficult to fulfill the resolution to make India a developed nation. The Congress is the biggest symbol of these three evils,” Modi told the gathering.

“Be it Congress MLAs or ministers, everyone is unruly, and the public is suffering. The Congress has handed over the people of Rajasthan to robbers, rioters, tyrants, and criminals,” he said. He went on to claim that even children in Rajasthan are expressing their discontent with the current leadership.

Modi directed his criticism towards the Congress’s role in the law and order situation in Rajasthan, alleging that the party’s ministers have been seen aligning themselves with those who committed atrocities against women.

Highlighting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) commitment to women’s welfare and safety, Modi said that Congress support boosts the morale of anti-social forces in Rajasthan.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Rajasthan also included a 4.5-kilometer roadshow in Bikaner, where he rallied in support of BJP candidates for the upcoming assembly polls on November 25.

Accompanied by Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Modi engaged with the crowd, waving and shaking hands during the roadshow that covered Bikaner East and Bikaner West constituencies.

Cultural performances, including the traditional Kalbelia dance, added vibrancy to the roadshow, which started from Junagadh and ended at the Gokul Circle. Strict security measures were in place for the event.

Modi will also hold a roadshow in Jaipur on Tuesday evening. It will start from Sanganeri Gate and traverse through Bapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar, Kishanpole Bazaar, Chhoti Chaupad, Tripolia Bazaar, Badi Chaupad and Johri Bazaar before culminating at the Sanganeri Gate.

PM Modi offers humanitarian support in call with Palestinian President after Gaza hospital tragedy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In a statement shared on X, Modi expressed his sympathy, saying, “Spoke to the President of the Palestinian Authority H.E. Mahmoud Abbas. Conveyed my condolences at the loss of civilian lives at the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. We will continue to send humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (October 19) engaged in a conversation with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, extending his condolences for the tragic loss of lives at Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.

In the course of their discussion, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Furthermore, he reaffirmed India’s consistent stance on the Israel-Palestine issue.

During the conversation, PM Modi also expressed his deep concern about the prevailing terrorism and violence amidst the ongoing conflict in the region.

“Shared our deep concern at the terrorism, violence and deteriorating security situation in the region. Reiterated India’s long-standing principled position on the Israel-Palestine issue,” PM Modi’s post added.

Additionally, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasised that India’s position concerning the Palestine issue has been “longstanding and consistent”. He clarified, “India has always advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine living within secure and recognised borders side by side at peace with Israel. That position remains the same.”

Earlier, on Wednesday (October 18), PM Modi had conveyed his shock and condolences for the lives lost in the explosion at a Gaza hospital. He expressed his concerns regarding the increasing civilian casualties in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, underlining the need for accountability for those responsible.

In a post on X, PM Modi shared, “Deeply shocked at the tragic loss of lives at the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and prayers for speedy recovery of those injured. Civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict are a matter of serious and continuing concern. Those involved should be held responsible.”

The explosion at the Gaza City hospital, which occurred on Tuesday, claimed the lives of hundreds of people.

Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs Official Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, strongly condemned the “horrific” terrorist attack on Israel and stressed the importance of the international community working together to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Bagchi also reiterated India’s support for direct negotiations to achieve a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine issue and expressed concern about civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation.

Bagchi added, “There was also the issue of Palestine and on that, we have reiterated our position in favour of direct negotiations for establishing a two-state solution. We have also expressed our concern at the civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation. We would urge the strict observance of international humanitarian law.”

As the Israel-Hamas conflict enters its 13th day, global protests against the deadly strike on the Gaza hospital persist. There have been reports of arrests of Jewish anti-war demonstrators within the US Congress, as reported by CNN.

The Palestinian Mission to the UN in Geneva has decried Israeli disinformation and propaganda following the tragic Gaza hospital explosion. According to CNN, more than 3,785 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since Hamas’s October 7 attack inside Israel, which resulted in the loss of over 1,400 lives.

The Women’s Reservation Bill was first introduced under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2008 and generated significant debate and discussion. The bill successfully passed through the Rajya Sabha in 2010, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward gender equality in politics. However, its progress was halted when the UPA government lost the general elections in 2014, causing the bill to lapse.

The Lok Sabha began its first proceedings in the new parliament building with great anticipation and historical significance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by senior ministers and other Members of Parliament (MPs), officially entered the majestic structure that would serve as the epicenter of India’s legislative affairs.

Prime Minister Modi, in his address within the newly inaugurated parliament building, introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that had been long-awaited by advocates of gender equality. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled the bill, setting the stage for an important debate and legislative process.

The Women’s Reservation Bill seeks to address a persistent gender disparity in India’s political representation. It proposes to reserve 33 percent of the total seats in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. This bold move aims to empower and elevate women’s voices in the country’s highest decision-making bodies.

According to the proposed legislation, one-third of the total number of seats reserved for scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) communities will now be reserved for women from these marginalized groups. This approach recognizes the intersecting challenges faced by women belonging to these communities and strives to give them a more prominent role in shaping policies that directly impact their lives.

However, the bill also acknowledges the need for periodic review and evolution. It includes a provision stating that the reservation of seats for women will cease to exist 15 years after the commencement of the amendment act.

The reintroduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha carries a rich history. It was first introduced under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2008 and generated significant debate and discussion. The bill successfully passed through the Rajya Sabha in 2010, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward gender equality in politics. However, its progress was halted when the UPA government lost the general elections in 2014, causing the bill to lapse.

Aditi Phadnis, the Political Editor at Business Standard, pointed out several crucial considerations regarding the implementation of this reservation policy. She raised questions about the timeline for the reservation’s activation, particularly with respect to seats allocated for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Given the changing demographics, it’s conceivable that additional seats may need to be earmarked for these communities, which presents its own set of challenges.

Phadnis also highlighted that, based on her understanding, the reservation will likely operate on a rotation basis. This implies that current Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) representing both general and reserved constituencies may need to relinquish their seats if those seats are designated for women. This aspect introduces uncertainty about how this change will be received by male politicians.

“We have to see from when this reservation will become effective. Reservations have been made for SC and ST seats, I am assuming, from the existing lot but the population of the SC and ST has gone up – maybe more seats will have to be reserved. That is another issue. As far as I can tell, the reservation will be by rotation. The fact is that existing MPs and MLAs from general and reserved constituencies will then have to vacate their seats if their seat is going to be a reserved one for women. So how this will be received by the men – I am not sure,” she said.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, the Executive Chairperson of Biocon and Biocon Biologics, underscored the importance of having women lawmakers to shape policies that specifically address the needs of women. She advocates for policies that are not only designed for women but are also crafted and championed by women themselves. This, she believes, is the essential essence of the matter. She further emphasized the necessity of increasing the representation of women in positions of policymaking and legislation.

“I do believe that you need women lawmakers because many policies are being enunciated for women and we must do it for women, by women, of women. That is the real crux of the matter. We must have more women policymakers and lawmakers. If you create this mandate, t does create the first level of equal opportunities for women and after that you don’t need reservation bill to see more women entering into the fray,” she explained.

Sujata Paul, the Congress Party’s Spokesperson, expressed strong support for the passage of this bill.

“We want this bill to be passed. Unless and until you get an opportunity, how are you going to showcase your talent and what you can bring to the table? That is why this reservation is very important and we are all for it.”

B20 Summit | RP Sanjiv Goenka Group chairman hints at likely entry into chemicals

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Sanjiv Goenka’s vision for RP Sanjiv Goenka Group in India for 2023 and beyond reflects a diversified and forward-thinking approach. By focusing on FMCG, Ayurveda, and Green Energy, the group aims to cater to the evolving needs of Indian consumers while championing sustainability. Additionally, the group’s forthcoming entry into the chemicals sector demonstrates its commitment to exploring new horizons and contributing to India’s economic growth.

Unveiling one of India’s most diversified conglomerate’s ambitious roadmap for its future endeavours, Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, shared his insights into the group’s expansion strategy, emphasising a strong focus on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), Ayurveda, and green energy.

Talking to CNBC-TV18, on the sidelines of B20 Summit India 2023, Goenka, also hinted at the group’s imminent entry into the chemicals sector as it is always committed to diversification and sustainability.

Below is the edited excerpts of the interview

Q: What do you make of Prime Minister Modi‘s message to India?

A: The Prime Minister always gives us a new direction. And this whole thing of consumer care is absolutely brilliant. The concept of consumer care and the way he articulated that, if you care for the consumer, consumer rights will be a thing of the past. And I think it’s this thing about reaching out to people, it’s about inclusion, it’s about growth, but sustainable growth, it’s about inclusive growth. I think that is a brilliant message.

Q: There’s been a lot of talk on sustainability ESG at the B20. But now when it comes to implementing the key recommendations, which one according to you will be the most important? And if I were to ask you about your own sustainability agenda across your businesses, how are you implementing this?

A: All I can say is that when you look at a treatment, you can’t look at one aspect of it, you have to look at it holistically. And therefore the whole thing has to be implemented, not in bits and pieces but together. Yes, it’s a process that has to be undergone. It’s not going to happen overnight but if one is steadfast in the implementation, it will happen. And that’s the only way forward.

Q: I’d like to ask you about your own group, the RP Sanjeev Goenka group’s big focus areas, your own priorities for the next five years. How would you list them?

A: We will focus on FMCG, we will focus on Ayurveda, we will focus on green energy, we will focus on growth. And we are going to get into chemicals hopefully soon.

Q: How do you see growth? This has been a difficult and volatile year also how do you see the export markets opening up? And what’s your outlook for your own growth going forward?

A: Even if I sound biased, I’m very bullish about our companies, about our performance. We’ve actually taken a lot of actions over the last two or three years to consolidate, to conserve costs and I think we are now poised for very strong growth.

Q: Any one challenge that you see for India’s growth? Everyone here has said this is India’s century, this is India’s decade and India’s time has come but if you think there is one big concern that we need to overcome, what would that be?

A: I do not believe that there is really one major concern per se. I think we have an exceptional leader in Prime Minister Modi and he is showing us the way, has shown us, will show us the way to move forward.
