Summary

The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and was en route to Beijing when it suddenly vanished without a trace. Despite extensive search operations and tireless efforts by countless individuals, the plane has never been found.

The world witnessed one of the most perplexing and heart-wrenching aviation tragedies on this day, nine years ago. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished into thin air on March 8, 2014, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and unspeakable grief.

The years that have passed since that fateful day have only deepened the mystery surrounding its disappearance. Although debris was discovered several years later, it has failed to provide any conclusive evidence about the fate of the aircraft or the passengers on board.

The Malaysian Government’s declaration of all 239 passengers and crew as presumed dead in January 2015 only added to the heartache and sorrow that the families and friends of the victims had been enduring. It remains the deadliest and most enigmatic incident in the history of aviation involving a Boeing 777.

This tragic event has also raised serious questions about the safety of modern air travel, despite the advanced technology available today. The fact that a plane as large and sophisticated as the Boeing 777 could vanish without a trace has shaken the aviation industry to its core.

What happened?

Despite extensive search operations, the exact cause of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 remains unknown. The last communication from the crew with air traffic control was 38 minutes after takeoff, and the aircraft vanished from radar screens shortly afterward. It was later tracked by military radar for another hour, deviating from its planned flight path and crossing the Malay Peninsula and Andaman Sea.

After years of searching, debris was found, confirmed or believed to be from the MH370 aircraft washed up along the African coast and on islands in the Indian Ocean. However, the exact location of the plane itself remains a mystery.

Malaysian investigators have not drawn any definitive conclusions about what happened aboard the flight, but have not ruled out the possibility that the aircraft was deliberately taken off course.

Multiple theories have been put forward to explain the disappearance of MH370, including mechanical failure, pilot error, and even terrorism. Some theories suggest that the plane may have been intentionally diverted, possibly by the captain of the flight, leading to speculation about his motives and mental state.

Families demand justice

The families affected by the tragic disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines MH370 plane are seeking justice for their loved ones. As per a report on IANS, they have demanded action from the authorities in Kuala Lumpur to launch a new search for the missing aircraft.

According to CNN reports, the Malaysian government hired the US seabed exploration company Ocean Infinity in 2018 to locate the missing aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean. The government had promised to pay the company up to $70 million if they were successful in their search. Unfortunately, the operation was unsuccessful.

Following a fruitless two-year underwater search costing $135 million, Malaysia, China, and Australia called off the search for the missing plane in January 2017.

However, Voice370, a group representing the families of those onboard, has reported that Ocean Infinity plans to launch a new search as early as this summer. They have urged the Malaysian government to consider the firm’s proposals on a conditional fee basis, meaning the firm would only receive payment if they successfully locate the aircraft.

“Ocean Infinity, over the last 12 months have made real progress working with many people to further understand… The events in 2014,” said Voice370 in a statement to CNN at a commemorative event marking the ninth anniversary of MH370’s disappearance. “Ultimately, this has greatly improved their chances of conducting a successful search.”

Netflix, a leading global streaming platform, has now launched a gripping three-part documentary series that delves into the puzzling vanishing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. The series, which was released on March 8, 2023 and titled “MH370: The Plane That Disappeared” sheds new light on the perplexing 2014 disappearance of the flight.

Malaysia Airlines seeks aid from wealth fund Khazanah, creditor talks continue

Summary

The group said it remains in talks for restructuring and that it was targeting a commercial agreement in the first week of December.

Malaysia Airlines’ parent company has sought financial aid from its sole shareholder, the nation’s sovereign wealth fund, as debt restructuring talks with creditors drag on, the company said on Saturday.

“Malaysia Aviation Group has requested financial support from our shareholder Khazanah Nasional although the company isn’t in a position to comment on the amount at this point in time,” it said in an email to Reuters.

The group said it remains in talks for restructuring and that it was targeting a commercial agreement in the first week of December.

The airline could be seeking as much as $500 million, said Malaysia’s Edge weekly, which first reported the news, citing unnamed sources.

Khazanah said any funding for the airline will depend on the outcome of discussions with creditors and lessors, which it said is crucial to the success of the restructuring.

Malaysia Airlines is seeking to restructure after the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to slash operations.

The parent company had warned leasing companies that Khazanah would stop funding the group and force it into a winding down process if restructuring talks with lessors were unsuccessful, Reuters reported last month.

The carrier restructured after two deadly crashes in 2014, with Khazanah pumping in 6 billion ringgit ($1.5 billion). This time the government has said it will not bail out the struggling company.

Chief Executive Izham Ismail told staff in a memo last month that the restructuring talks were taking longer than planned.

DGCA asks all Indian airlines to avoid affected Iranian airspace

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Early Thursday, Iran shot down the RQ-4A Global Hawk drone of the US. This immediately escalated tensions in the region which is grappling with crippling sanctions after the US withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal.

Indian aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has asked all its domestic airlines to avoid the affected part of Iranian airspace where a US drone was shot down by the Gulf state.

Air India and IndiGo are the two airlines which would have to re-route their network following the advisory.

“No substantial effect on Air India flights. Details being worked out for rerouting on incoming flights,” Air India, chairman and managing director, Ashwani Lohani said.

The aviation regulator of the US, the Federal Aviation Administration, has already prohibited all its airlines and commercial operators from flying over the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

British Airways, KLM, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa among others are also avoiding flying over the region.

Early Thursday, Iran shot down the RQ-4A Global Hawk drone of the US. This immediately escalated tensions in the region which is grappling with crippling sanctions after the US withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal. The drone was a high-altitude robot used for surveillance over the ocean and coastal regions.

United Airlines has also decided to suspend service between India and Newark until September 1. United operated direct flights connecting Newark to Delhi and to Mumbai.

“Given current events in the Middle East and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, we have decided to suspend our service between India (Mumbai and Delhi) and Newark until September 1,” United said in an email response to a query from CNBC-TV18.

The US aviation regulator also warned pilots that flights are not permitted in the overwater area of the Tehran Flight Information Region until further notice, “due to heightened military activities and increased political tensions that might place commercial flights at risk,” adding that these military activities and political tensions present an inadvertent risk to US civil aviation operations and potential for miscalculation and misidentification.

Thousands stranded in Bangkok as flights affected by India Pakistan tensions

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Thousands of travellers were stranded in Bangkok on Thursday when Thai Airways International cancelled more than a dozen flights to and from Europe after Pakistan closed its airspace amid rising tensions with India.

Thousands of travellers were stranded in Bangkok on Thursday when Thai Airways International cancelled more than a dozen flights to and from Europe after Pakistan closed its airspace amid rising tensions with India.

Thai Airways flights resumed by Thursday afternoon after the airline secured permission to reroute flights over Chinese airspace, but it could take up to three days to clear a backlog of 3,000 passengers, an airline official said.

Flights to and from London, Munich, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Vienna, Stockholm, Zurich, Copenhagen, Oslo, Frankfurt and Rome had been scheduled to fly over Pakistani airspace on Thursday, Thai Airways said in a statement.

Most of the airline’s European flights leave after midnight and the cancellations left scores of passengers stuck at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Thailand is among the world’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing more than 38 million visitors last year, about 6.8 million of them from Europe.

‘YOU HAVE TO WAIT’

Swiss tourist Gerlinde Hoff, 60, stayed overnight at the airport with her husband and by midday was still waiting for another flight home.

“They only say ‘You have to wait, you have to wait, you have to wait,’ she said.

“I’m angry and I’m tired. It was such a nice holiday and now it’s a little bit not so nice”.

Airport director Suthirawat Suwannawat said 20 flights from Bangkok were cancelled and three planes that had left were forced to return when Pakistan closed its airspace on Wednesday night.

“There were around 4,900 passengers in transit … About 4,000 were Thai Airways passengers,” he said, adding that Taiwan’s EVA Airways had rerouted its 900 affected travellers.

EVA officials could not be reached for comment.

Thai Airways resumed its European flights later on Thursday after China granted permission to use its airspace, but service to and from Pakistan remained on hold.

The airline operates one flight a day to Karachi and Lahore and four flights per week to Islamabad.

Thera Buasri, director of Thai Airways’ ground operations control department, told reporters that stranded passengers had boarded flights home by Thursday afternoon, and the airline may send passengers on partner airlines.

“It’s now down to 3,000 remaining,” he said. “It’s expected to take no longer than three days to send them all off to their destinations”.

Pakistan closed its airspace on Wednesday as tensions with India escalated following tit-for-tat air strikes in the wake of a suicide attack that killed 40 Indian police in Kashmir on Feb. 14.

World powers have urged restraint between the two nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours, who have fought two wars over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

Many airlines route flights over Pakistan and the closure of its airspace caused major disruptions on Wednesday.

China’s civil aviation authority said at least 40 flights by foreign carriers had been diverted through its airspace.

Emirates and Qatar Airways suspended flights to Pakistan and others, such as Singapore Airlines and British Airways, were forced to reroute flights.

On Thursday, Singapore Airlines said its Europe-bound flights would continue as planned and be rerouted as necessary to avoid the affected airspace.

Malaysia Airlines said on its website it was not currently flying over the affected airspace
