The Ekana Stadium is the home ground of KL Rahul when he plays for his IPL team Lucknow Super Giants as a skipper, talked about how that ground has taught him some life lessons & bittersweet memories.
The last match that he played at the Lucknow stadium was when he met with a major thigh injury and was ruled out of the tournament, as well as had to go under the knife. “I entered the ground today and I had to do some running,” Rahul told BCCI.tv after India’s training session on Friday afternoon. “I told my trainer, Rajinikanth Sivagnanam sir that my heart was racing, because the last time I was here, I had not such a great experience, or not such a great moment in my career. It was a bit bittersweet.
“That injury had, obviously, a huge impact on me and my career. It wasn’t such a happy moment for me and my family. I’ve been through many injuries now in the little time that I’ve played for India. It’s not a great feeling for any athlete to keep getting injured so often and to go under the knife and to get surgeries is very, firstly, edifying – and, secondly, very painful.”
“But I started seeing the best in what happened much later when I was in Bangalore, and realised that it came at a time when I really needed that break away from the game, because there was a lot going on with me mentally – and, for the first time in my career, I felt like I had no answers.”
On Sunday, he wants to make memories that he’ll remember only for good as India takes on England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. “Obviously, I’m very happy to be back here in Lucknow and to change those memories and to make some new ones and some happy ones,” he said. “Obviously we play a very strong England team – they’re the champion team, the defending champions – so, looking forward to Sunday.”

“I had just taken a shower and was hoping to put my feet up for half an hour after the fielding innings, but I had to come in,”said K.L. Rahul after the game. This reminded me of a scene from the 83 biopic, where Ranveer Singh/Kapil Dev was called into bat after India lost early wickets. It was one of the greatest World Cup knocks ever — 175 not out against Zimbabwe. The movie gave us the closest glimpse of the epic innings as the match wasn’t televised.
However, it wasn’t the joy of the 1983 World Cup, but rather the nightmare of the 2019 World Cup semi-final which would have replayed in every Indian fan’s mind when India started their chase versus Australia on Sunday (October 8).
Two runs for three wickets was, in fact, worse. The eerie silence in Chepauk was finally broken by the two saviours — Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul.

Let’s spare a thought for K.L. Rahul. He wasn’t named in the original playing 11 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup and, 15 minutes before the toss, Shreyas Iyer pulled up with a back injury. 111 n.o. was the result!
He hung on to his place and how! It should never have been the case in the first place because he has been India’s best middle order batter for a while now. Since 2020, he has batted at No. 4 or lower on 27 occasions and has scored 1,326 runs, with three 100s and ten 50s at an impressive average of 66.30.
That’s a 50 plus score in every two innings. He has remained not out as well on seven occasions. In fact, he holds the highest average among any batter who has scored more than 1,000 runs at this time. Only six batters have scored more runs than him in this period and they have either played more games or enjoyed playing against lesser-ranked teams.
For me he was always the first pick in the ODI middle order. However, a spate of injuries and a late recovery put his place under threat for the World Cup 11 — which shouldn’t have been a point of contention to begin with.
There is a tendency in recent times for people to mix formats — but for me K.L. Rahul has been one of our best batters and is a pivotal cog for India’s chances at this World Cup.

On numerous occasions, I have heard the older generations speak in hushed tones about Gundappa Viswanath’s famous 97 not out in Chepauk. Against a menacing West indies attack, he stood his ground and it was an innings to remember for the ages as India won that Test match by 100 runs.
The ‘knowledgeable Chennai crowd’ was treated to a feast from another Karnataka batter, K.L. Rahul, who incidentally scored the same 97 not out in the World Cup opener versus Australia.
I am sure this innings will stand the test of time not only for the Chepauk public but for Rahul himself, as he is once again a settled member of this Indian team.

What’s next for Team India?
India now travels up north for their next World Cup encounter against Afghanistan on October 11 in Delhi. Star opener Shubman Gill has been ruled out of this game, and you would expect Shardul Thakur to take R. Ashwin’s place as a pacer could be preferred over a spinner in Delhi. The pitch though offers some respite to the batters — especially the ones who didn’t open their account in Chennai. It promises to be a belter of a track with lots of runs on offer.
Ask the South Africans, who notched up the highest-ever ODI score in a World Cup game posting 428/5 in their 50 overs. A whopping 754 runs were scored in that match with three South African batters scoring hundreds as they opened their World Cup campaign in style.
India though will be looking forward to the match as the weight of expectations would be significantly reduced thanks to their morale-boosting win against Australia in difficult conditions.
Will this team get a biopic of their own though? Only time will tell.

Rahul joined the team after an injury-packed IPL season. He went through a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on September 4, following which he was given a clearance to travel to Sri Lanka to join the team for the Asia Cup. Rahul was ruled out of the opening two fixtures of Team India in Kandy as he caught a minor groin niggle recently.
Rahul was ruled out of the first two matches of the Asia Cup due to a “niggle”, delaying his much-anticipated return to the Indian team. “A lot of times, it’s also like you fight a big mental battle where you’re always thinking at the back of your head that, okay, I might feel pain. And when you are in that mindset, you can’t really start focusing on skills,” said Rahul in a video posted by BCCI.
“So, the biggest challenge was to get rid of that fear and get rid of that pain aspect of things.” He added that wicket-keeping requires a lot of strength in the quads and the biggest “question mark” in his mind while rehabilitating was how he would convince himself to don the role again after such a big surgery.
“The physios knew right away that surgery was the only way and that was the route that we had to take. It all happened really quickly.” Rahul said that once the mental barrier was crossed he could concentrate on his cricketing skills and be ready for the rigours of the Asia Cup.
“So, once that happened, then skill took place. I started sprinting and doing all of that. But again, unfortunately, in the process of doing that, I developed a small niggle just before I could come back into into the team, which was a big downer, and I was actually ahead of schedule.

Both Rahul and Iyer are trying to make a comeback for the Asia Cup otherwise their chances to make the cut for the World Cup would be next to nil. In the video, Iyer was seen firmly pushing a delivery from a fast bowler in the cover region with Rahul at the non-striker’s end. As it was a simulation, a local umpire was summoned to officiate.

Recently at an event, while talking about the No.4 position skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged that batters have failed to make the No. 4 spot their own in One Day Internationals (ODIs) ever since Yuvraj Singh hung his boots from international cricket.
“Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well — his numbers are really good,” Rohit told reporters on the sidelines of a LALIGA event in Mumbai.
It was already reported in PTI that the national selection committee under Ajit Agarkar will only select Rahul and Iyer if they happen to sustain the rigours of 50-over cricket, and for that, they had to undergo match simulation. In the case of Rahul, the selectors would also like to check out if he is fit to keep wickets for 50 overs and Iyer also needs to be on the field for the entire duration in order to prove their respective match fitness. Only batting fitness might not ensure a place in the squad of 15.
The NCA bigwigs are all tight-lipped about the fitness status but the Asia Cup team selection has been deferred because the Ajit Agarkar-led committee wants to give the duo the best chance to get fit before the continental showpiece. The squad is expected to be announced towards the middle or end of this week in Mumbai.
“Keeping 50 overs in Sri Lankan heat would take a toll and NCA can only give him fit certificate if he is able to don the big gloves without any apparent discomfort. Also, they haven’t played anything and the first international game against Pakistan (on September 2) could be a bit too much of a pressure. But then time is of the essence,” a BCCI source tracking the developments said.
It is understood that while Tilak Varma has made an impression, the selection committee would like to exercise caution with regard to throwing the Hyderabad southpaw at the deep end of the pool.
“Yes, he has started well and he will surely play ODIs in the future. But what if he is pushed too quickly and it turns out to be counter-productive? You can’t play with young careers. Yes, he could be discussed but only if both Iyer and Rahul are ruled out,” the source said.
