IndiGo to expand international operations, with flights to Indonesia and Saudi, says CEO

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

IndiGo currently operates 500 routes, including 100 international routes, and intends to extend its reach with new destinations in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

IndiGo plans to start flights to Bali, Indonesia and Medina in Saudi Arabia in the current fiscal as the airline continues to expand its network, CEO Pieter Elbers said recently. The airline is “well on track” to achieve the target of carrying 100 million passengers this financial year, he added.

IndiGo’s expansion plans for the current fiscal include the introduction of flights to Bali, Indonesia and Medina in Saudi Arabia, according to Elbers. The airline posted a net profit of Rs 189 crore in the September quarter, carrying 26 million passengers.

The current fiscal ends on March 31, 2024. Currently, IndiGo flies to 32 international and 85 domestic destinations, and operates more than 1,900 flights daily. It also has international codeshares with various airlines.

IndiGo has placed orders for A321 XLR planes that are expected to come in late 2024 or early 2025. “XLR will help us expand our range… when XLRs come in, that can bring us further into Europe to places like Athens… it can bring further into Asia to places like Seoul,” Elbers said.

IndiGo currently operates 500 routes, including 100 international ones, and intends to extend its reach with new destinations in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Amid Pratt & Whitney engine issues, IndiGo is implementing mitigating measures, acknowledging potential aircraft groundings in the fourth quarter but maintaining a focus on fleet management strategies.

Reently, amid rising concerns over fatigue among pilots, Elbers said the issue needs a “very considerate, holistic and in-depth approach”. In recent times, the issue of fatigue among pilots has come to the fore, especially after the death of an IndiGo pilot, who had collapsed at the boarding gate of Nagpur airport.

During an interaction with reporters here on Monday, Elbers said the airline has introduced a tool to analyse fatigue among pilots. “The best way to improve safety is to work in a transparent measure… We are taking the feedback (on pilots’ fatigue) seriously”.

Find out why some international flights now take 2 extra hours for the same journey

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Conflicts in the Middle East have long made Yemen, Syria and Sudan no-fly zones for most airlines. US and UK operators avoid Iranian airspace, pushing long-distance traffic toward the west, over Iraq.

The Middle East has long been a global crossroads for air travel, with hundreds of aircraft bisecting the region on long-distance journeys connecting the US, Europe and Asia.

Plying those routes has become more challenging, with rising tensions forcing airlines to curtail services as a safety precaution. The war between Israel and Hamas, in a region already studded with hot zones, has added to the complications of flying between east and the west.

That’s after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine already added hours to many journeys by shutting down vast airspace to transnational operators — including the Great Circle routes through Siberia, a popular gateway between the continents.

Israel’s El Al has stopped flying over much of the Arabian peninsula, citing safety concerns, swinging wide at a cost of several hours on flights to Bangkok. The carrier also postponed services to India, while canceling seasonal routes to Tokyo.

Most other airlines stopped flying to Tel Aviv after the outbreak of hostilities. Deutsche Lufthansa AG also quit Beirut for now, while Air France-KLM said it has seen a slight reduction in passenger demand for trips to the region.

The wars also create potential issues for people traveling on carriers that still fly over contentious areas. Globally, demand for international travel has fallen by 5 percentage points since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, according to ForwardKeys, a travel analytics firm.

Conflicts in the Middle East have long made Yemen, Syria and Sudan no-fly zones for most airlines. US and UK operators avoid Iranian airspace, pushing long-distance traffic toward the west, over Iraq.

While the recent outbreak hasn’t caused major delays to date on overflights through the region, the Iran and Iraq pathways each face further strains. Attacks on US and coalition forces have increased in Iraq and Syria, while Iran has warned that new fronts could open as Israel moves ahead with its ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Should airspace closures spread in the Middle East, about 300 daily flights between Europe and destinations in South Asia and Southeast Asia would be most affected, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Carriers have alternatives, though expensive and not entirely without risk — heading south over Egypt, at the cost of several hours, or to the north, over areas of recent conflict like Armenia and Azerbaijan, and then either around or over Afghanistan.

“An airspace closure of this magnitude would be really challenging for airline operations planning and revenue management teams,’’ said Anne Agnew Correa, senior vice president of forecasting & modeling at advisory firm MBA Aviation.

Carriers in the European Union, UK, US and Canada have already been contending with costly detours around banned Russian airspace on flights to Asia. It’s forced Finnair Oyj to overhaul its long-distance strategy and write down aircraft that no longer had enough range. Air France-KLM ordered longer-range A350 jetliners, in part to cope with Russia’s ban.

Each extra hour of flight added $7,227 to the variable cost of a typical widebody journey in 2021, based on Federal Aviation Administration estimates. Expenses such as fuel and labor have only increased since then, said John Gradek, an expert on aviation operations and lecturer at McGill University in Montreal.

The cost advantage is showing its effect as carriers like China Eastern Airlines Corp return to the international scene.

With seat capacity between China, the pre-Covid leader in outbound tourism, and the UK surpassing 2019 levels this quarter, Chinese carriers have taken market share at the expense of British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd., based on schedules tracked by Cirium. The same is true in Italy, where 20% more capacity is on offer, and Chinese airlines have also logged gains.

Scheduled capacity on flights from China to Germany, France and the Netherlands remains 20% or more below fourth-quarter 2019 levels. Chinese carriers have picked up share on services to all three countries. Air France, KLM and Lufthansa have each lost ground.

British Airways has increased frequencies to Shanghai and Beijing, but seat volumes to China remain nearly 40% below 2019 levels in the fourth quarter, according to Cirium. Parent IAG SA reported capacity to Asia-Pacific was 54% below 2019 levels in the third quarter.

Air France-KLM doesn’t consider itself at a disadvantage because most of its corporate customers won’t risk putting staff on the Chinese flights crossing Russia, Chief Executive Officer Ben Smith said on an Oct. 27 call.

Indeed, Americans were among the passengers on an Air India flight from New Delhi to San Francisco in June that had to make an emergency landing in eastern Russia because of an engine issue. “There is absolutely zero pressure on us to fly over Russia to save time,” Smith said.

Starting from September 1, all international flight operations at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will be shifted to the recently launched Terminal 2 (T2).

In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol, Hari Marar, MD and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates KIA, said, “International operations will be completely relocated to T2, while Terminal 1 (T1) will exclusively serve as a domestic terminal.

September 1 is the firm date for the collective transition of all international airlines from T1 to T2. The transition will not be carried out in phases, as immigration counters and customs office need to be set up. At midnight on August 31, all international traffic will be shifted to T2. This overnight transition is quite exciting”.

Work is underway at T2 in full swing. Regarding the preparedness to commence international operations from T2, he said they have an Operational Readiness Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme.

“ORAT programme is already underway, which involves conducting trials with all airlines and ground handling companies and testing all the systems. So by the time we move in, the staff will have already undergone extensive training. They will be well-acquainted with the floors, routes, and various other aspects, guaranteeing a seamless operation right from day one,” said Marar.

T2, known as a terminal in a garden, commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023. With T2 opening for international operations on September 1, global passengers traversing through Bengaluru airport can look forward to better facilities, including enhanced baggage drop facilities, streamlined immigration process as well as the addition of more duty-free outlets, restaurants, and lounges.

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet is ready to kickstart services between Agartala and Chittagong in Bangladesh but the MHA is yet to notify the setting up of an immigration centre at the airport that will allow foreign travellers to make it the first port of entry, a senior official said.

International flight services will start at the Agartala airport as soon as the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) gives clearance on immigration facilitation, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet is ready to kickstart services between Agartala and Chittagong in Bangladesh but the MHA is yet to notify the setting up of an immigration centre at the airport that will allow foreign travellers to make it the first port of entry, he said.

“We are hoping to get all the relevant protocols cleared from the Centre by mid-June. Once the process is complete, international flight service will start at the earliest,” director of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport KC Meena told PTI.

At present, four airlines operate 34-36 domestic flights daily from the MBB Airport, which handles around 4,500 passengers per day.

Meanwhile, Vistara will introduce a flight service between Agartala and Bengaluru from August 1. At present, Indigo and Akasa operate three flights on the route, Meena said.

“Vistara is scheduled to operate a flight on the Agartala-Bengaluru route from August 1. The flight will arrive here directly from Bengaluru, and on its return journey from Agartala, it will go via Guwahati. It will benefit flyers immensely,” he said.

Chief Minister Manik Saha had urged Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for the introduction of more flights on the route.

India encouraging smaller carriers to induct wide-body planes to become an international hub

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Civil Aviation Ministry is encouraging budget carriers to induct widebody planes in order to become an international hub, Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said on March 21.

The Civil Aviation Ministry is encouraging budget carriers to induct widebody planes in order to become an international hub, Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said on March 21. Speaking on the sidelines of the CAPA India Aviation Summit in Delhi to CNBC-TV18, Bansal said IndiGo showed interest and the government has given the airline approval for wet leasing.

In December 2022, IndiGo sought the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) approval to wet lease Boeing 777 aircraft, which will be utilised for operating flights on the Delhi-Istanbul route.

This is the first time that the carrier will induct wide-body planes into its fleet and the move also comes against the backdrop of global supply chain issues impacting aircraft deliveries. The airline will wet-lease two aircraft.

Bansal said Collins Aerospace has set up a facility in Bengaluru to make emergency suits that fall down during evacuation. Some avionics components are also being made in Bengaluru.

Boeing, on the other hand, is making tailfin of its aircraft in India, he said, adding that only a small percentage of manufacturing is being done domestically as big OEMs already have manufacturing facilities in place globally.

He believes it is tall ask to tell these OEMs to move manufacturing setups to India overnight as a manufacturing ecosystem develops over a period of time. Bansal asserted that OEMs would want to set up plants in India when the volumes are high and that engine makers will be the first ones to set up shops in the country.

Also Read: Jyotiraditya Scindia hopeful Indian aviation sector growth story is just taking to the skies

He added that rocket engines and aircraft manufacturing firm Safran has already committed a $100 million investment in Hyderabad.

Talking about Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engine issues, the Aviation Secretary said, the matter has been taken up with the engine maker at the highest level. He said Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has spoken to P&W on many aircraft being grounded due to engine issues, which is impacting and impeding the growth of the aviation sector.

“We have asked them to fast forward supplies to us…P&W said it will respond on the matter by this week,” he said.

Bansal also spoke about Air India Engineering Services (AIESL), saying it is a good company, has a healthy top line and bottom line and he’s confident there will be a number of interested parties who will bid for Air India’s engineering subsidiary. The reserve price will be decided closer to the date of inviting bids, he said.

On increasing tariffs at smaller airports, Bansal said, the consultation paper is out and is likely to be finalized in the coming weeks. He explained that all non-major airports are running into losses and they need to be given some return on their investment. The hike is different for three clusters of small airports, he said.

He also said that 25 airports have been identified under the National Monetization plan for PPP but at present, the government is looking at 11 airports.

Reflecting on bilateral agreements, Bansal said India has an open sky policy with all countries. Vietnam and Indonesia have asked for more frequencies to India while Russia has already been allowed more frequent flights, adding all middle east carriers are asking for additional seats but they haven’t been given any yet.

Sri Lanka resumes international flights from Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Mattala– dubbed as the world’s emptiest airport began its international services in 2013 but stopped five years later in 2018 due to low demand. There have been no flights to Mattala since February this year.

Sri Lanka on Thursday resumed international flight services from the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport located in the southern district of Hambantota with nearly 400 Russian tourists arriving in the island nation still grappling with the financial crisis.

Mattala– dubbed as the world’s emptiest airport began its international services in 2013 but stopped five years later in 2018 due to low demand. There have been no flights to Mattala since February this year.

The inaugural charter flight that will operate twice weekly between Moscow and Mattala arrived at Mattala with 398 Russian tourists on Thursday morning.

“This is a historic first flight from Russia to Mattala. We hope more flights will operate to have more Russian tourists,” Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Aviation at the welcome ceremony told reporters.

Sri Lankan Airport Authority (SLAA) spokesperson Sumith de Silva said that Russia’s Red Wings airline made its inaugural flight to Mattala with 398 Russian tourists.

“This charter flight will operate twice weekly flights Moscow-Mattala-Moscow. In the longer term we hope that commercial airline services would arrive at Mattala,” Sumith told PTI.

Russia is a major market for Sri Lanka. Some 8,000 Russians visited Sri Lanka in November, topping the list for the highest number of tourist arrivals, followed by Indian and British travellers.

The tourism sector is the main source of foreign exchange earnings for cash-strapped Sri Lanka.

However, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 severely crippled the tourism sector and was one of the major reasons for Sri Lanka’s economic travails.

With scarcities of aviation fuel due to the forex shortages, airlines were facing problems with refuelling in Colombo.

The resumption of flights is expected to help the island nation’s tourism sector and provide a fillip to its beleaguered economy.

Sri Lanka had earlier partnered with India for developing the Jaffna International Airport which now operates a Chennai-Jaffna service.

Between 2015 and 2019 the Sri Lanka government had contemplated leasing out the Mattala airport to be managed by an Indian operation.

India and Sri Lanka resumed direct flight services between Chennai and Jaffna, three years after it discontinued the services due to the Covid pandemic.

The service is expected to boost travel from South India which has close cultural and religious ties with Northern Sri Lanka.

IndiGo to induct wide-body Boeing aircraft for international flights: Sources

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“International air travel is going through a strong period of recovery, and demand continues to rise in the upcoming festive and winter season. This is a positive sign for the industry and IndiGo remains very bullish on strong growth for international travel to and from India in the future,” the airline said.

IndiGo, India’s biggest airline by market share, is inducting Boeing planes into its fleet for the first time to bolster its international operations.

Official sources confirmed to CNBC-TV18 that the airline is inducting upto four wide-body Boeing 777 planes through a wet lease, which means the aircraft will come with crew, maintenance, and insurance.

Earlier in the day, IndiGo had confirmed its decision to induct more aircraft for its international operations.

“International air travel is going through a strong period of recovery, and demand continues to rise in the upcoming festive and winter season. This is a positive sign for the industry and IndiGo remains very bullish on strong growth for international travel to and from India in the future,” the airline said.

“As an interim measure, we have decided to take on wet lease certain aircraft to cover the shortfall for our scheduled international operations,” the statement further added.

However, the airline declined to comment on CNBC-TV18’s query on whether these planes will be Boeing 777, or of some other make.

IndiGo has over 275 aircraft in its current fleet — largely narrow-body Airbus planes. The airline operates over 1,600 daily flights connecting 74 domestic destinations and 26 international routes.

Industry experts say the induction of wide-body aircraft will help IndiGo fly directly on long and ultra-longhaul routes like Europe and United States, which are top destinations among Indian travellers.

United Airlines is scheduled to begin daily flights from Bengaluru to San Francisco in the last quarter of 2022, according to Kempegowda International Airport. Australian national carrier Qantas will begin four weekly flights to Sydney from September 14, the airport said in a statement on Monday while giving an update on the international flight operations.

Two weekly flights to Tel Aviv (Air India) and daily flights to Seattle (American Airlines) are also planned in the near future, it said. Additionally, new routes launched a few months before the outbreak of the pandemic have already been re-connected.

Celebi Aviation to focus on technology led growth eyes Air India ground handling unit

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Celebi Aviation, a ground handling company, plans to focus on technology-led expansion for its warehousing and cargo services, with the intention of fully recovering its ground handling business once foreign flights reach pre-covid levels in India.

Ground handling company Celebi Aviation will focus on technology-led growth for its warehouse and cargo services and is hopeful of complete recovery in its ground handling business once international flights reach pre-covid level in India.

The company has so far invested over $220 million in India with investments catering to upgrading infrastructure to handle more than 700,000 tons per year, increasing perishable cargo capacity to 65,000 tons per year, undertaking security initiatives and adding additional handling equipment and a dedicated transshipment centre. Specifically over the last two years, the company said that it has dedicated its energy towards investment in technology and digitising the workspace.

Going forward, Celebi aims to enhance its warehouse management system to include new features to bring in more productivity and also wants to enable extensive digitisation.

“We shall be exploring technologies like IOT, AI, Blockchain in different areas like temperature monitoring, data integration with airport systems, routine tasks automation etc. Adopting tools for digitisation of manual paper-based processes for improved efficiency would be actively pursued,” Mr Kamesh Peri, CEO-India, Çelebi Delhi Cargo told CNBC-TV18 in an e-mail interview.

While the company’s ground handling business suffered due to ban on scheduled international commercial flights for almost two years, the air cargo market came under the spotlight and emerged as a major revenue stream with revenue from cargo in the Indian aviation sector growing in the last year from Rs 1,498 crore to Rs 2,300 crore.

“The industry is getting back very slowly as we learn to co-exist with the virus. With this, we’re hopeful that the airlines will start returning back to their pre Covid capacity soon. …the business (ground handling) for us mostly depends on the demand for international flights. We expect that to come back steadily to pre Covid levels by next year early. Our Cargo warehousing stream is almost back to old levels,” Mr Murali Ramachandra, CEO-India Celebi told CNBC-TV18 in the e-mail interview.

Currently present at Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin and Ahmedabad, the company is planning to expand operations at other airports as well. The company ventured into cargo and warehousing services in 2009 with the establishment of Delhi Cargo Terminal Management India Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Delhi airport and Celebi Aviation.

“It was only during the pandemic that the Indian air cargo could catch the market spotlight when the financially crashing airlines found solace by focusing their efforts on the cargo operations, which comparatively flourished on the back of pharma, perishables and e-commerce transportation.

Under the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ initiative of the Government of India, domestic freighters in the country have increased from 8 to 28, a surge of almost 3.5 times. Going ahead, demand is expected to rise faster than passenger belly capacity growth,” Peri added.

Also read: DGCA warns airlines against offering passengers unserviceable seats

While the company has pursued organic growth opportunities in the past, it is also looking at expansion via inorganic route.

“On the Cargo front, we are looking at emerging opportunities in new airports. While most would be pursued on our own, in few others we would work with partners,” Peri added.

In ground handling segment as well, the company is open to “meaningful” opportunities.

“We won the tender to provide BME (Bridge Mounted Equipment) services at Bangalore Airport and have already operationalized the same. We have also won the ground handling licence at the New Goa Airport and at Ahmedabad Airport,” Ramachandra said.

Bridge Mounted Equipment consists of external Pre-Conditioned Air units and Fixed Electrical Ground Power units. BME allows airlines to achieve safer, and more economical operations during ground time by keeping its auxiliary power switched off.

In continuation with the company’s inorganic growth strategy, Celebi is also eyeing Air India’s ground handling company Air India Air Transport Services and is expected to bid once the government invites applications.

“Celebi was one of the first to show interest when the government proposed to put AIATS up for privatisation in 2019. If it is put up for sale by the Government, we shall definitely be interested,” Ramachandra added.

Air India’s ground handling unit Air India Air Transport Services Ltd is yet to be privatised and currently provides ground handling services at over 60 airports across the country.
