Rekha Singh, the widow of Galwan Valley martyr Naik Deepak Singh, is breaking barriers and carrying forward her husband’s legacy by becoming a Lieutenant in the Indian Army. She is among the 40 women set to graduate from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on April 29.

Singh’s husband, Naik Deepak Singh, was posthumously given the Vir Chakra, the third-highest wartime military honour in India, for his valiant actions during the conflict in the isolated valley while battling numerically superior soldiers from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in June 2020.

Rekha Singh’s story is a testament to the growing number of army wives whose husbands were killed in combat or in the line of duty and who are pursuing a career in the armed forces to carry forward their loved ones’ legacy.

US Senate resolution says Arunachal integral part of India, condemns China — how important is this move?

The United States – in a recently passed bi-partisan resolution – has formally recognised the McMahon Line as the international border between China and India. What is the McMahon Line and what this development means for India?

In February 2023, the US Senate introduced a resolution with the title ‘Reaffirming the state of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory and condemning the People’s Republic of China’s provocations in South Asia’.

The resolution seeks to reaffirm the status of Arunachal Pradesh as an Indian territory and condemn the provocative actions taken by the People’s Republic of China in South Asia.

Also read: Beijing monitors share prices of Indian companies linked to Chinese businesses

It came after December 2022 clashes between Indian and Chinese forces in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

The resolution denounces several actions taken by China that have destabilised the region and caused tensions with neighboring countries. These actions include the use of military force to alter the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, building of villages in disputed areas, and expansion of territorial claims in Bhutan.

Additionally, China’s publication of maps with Mandarin language names for cities and features in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh is also condemned.

The resolution expresses unequivocal support for recognising the state of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, and it also calls for strengthening the strategic partnership between the US and India, as well as the Quad to support the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

The resolution is bipartisan in nature and seeks to condemn China’s military activities while also enhancing the relationship between the US and India.

What is the McMahon Line? The 1914 Simla Convention (attended by the representatives of British India. Tibet and Republic of China) recognised the McMahon Line as the boundary between Tibet (an independent region at the time) and British India.

The McMahon Line was drawn by Henry McMahon, foreign secretary of the British-run Government of India and the chief negotiator of the convention at Simla.

In 1950, China captured Tibet, a move that was not recognised by India and Tibet, who had signed a convention together. However, China had not signed the convention. The line first appeared on an official Survey of India map in 1937, and would become significant in the political history of the region.

The December 9 face-off, which is the first major incident since the bloody Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh on June 15, 2020, occurred when 300-400 soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) intruded the LAC in Tawang sector and was contested by Indian troops “in a firm and resolute manner

Several Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured when the troops from both countries clashed at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 before disengaging, the Army said on Monday.

The December 9 face-off, which is the first major incident since the bloody Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh on June 15, 2020, occurred when 300-400 soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) intruded the LAC in the Tawang sector and Indian troops responded “in a firm and resolute manner”, the Army said in a statement.

Troops from both sides suffered injuries and immediately disengaged from the area.

At least six injured Indian soldiers were shifted to the military hospital in Guwahati, The Times of India reported quoting a source.

On Tuesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called a meeting with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari to discuss the India-China border clash.

The chiefs of three defence services and CDS Chauhan are believed to have briefed the defence minister on the security situation along LAC with China, News18 reported.

The defence minister later told the Parliament that Indian forces were “committed to guarding our borders” and that the matter was being discussed with China through diplomatic channels.

“I want to assure the House that our forces are committed to guarding our borders and ready to thwart any attempt that will be made to challenge it,” Singh said in the Lok Sabha.

Here is a look at a timeline of India-China clashes since 2019.

May 2020: On May 5-6, Indian and Chinese patrols clashed on the northern bank of Ladakh’s Pangong Tso Lake. Videos showed soldiers of both countries engaging in fistfights, throwing stones at each other and Chinese troops attacking Indian soldiers with nail-studded clubs.

On May 9, soldiers engage in a heated confrontation in north Sikkim’s Naku La area. Seven Chinese and four Indian soldiers were injured. On May 12, there were reports of tensions building up in Galwan Valley.

China’s foreign ministry accused Indian troops of trespassing on the LAC on May 19. India refuted the contention on May 21.

By May 25, China brought in nearly 5,000 soldiers on its side of the disputed border in the Ladakh sector. India also sent military reinforcements.

June 2020: A rare meeting was held between top military officers, Major General Liu Lin, commander of the People’s Liberation Army in South Xinjiang region, and Lieutenant General Harinder Singh, commander of Leh-based 14 Corps, on June 6. The two discussed the de-escalation plan.

On June 15, India and China engaged in the deadliest clash in 45 years in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in the clash, which led to a military stand-off with China and several rounds of military talks for the disengagement process. Sources in the Indian army said soldiers died in a physical fight that involved stones and batons and was not shot at.

July 2020: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ladakh and lauded the bravery of Indian troops.

January 2021: Another clash between the two troops left soldiers from both sides injured. The clash occurred along the border between China and India’s Sikkim state, which lies between Bhutan and Nepal. Indian soldiers foiled an attempt by the Chinese to intrude across the border in Sikkim. At least 20 PLA soldiers were reportedly injured in the clash.

February 2021: For the first time since the clash, China acknowledged that five Chinese military officers and soldiers were killed in the Galwan region. The first breakthrough in the series of talks at the military and the diplomatic level was achieved when China’s defence ministry said that troops from both countries on the southern and northern shores of Pangong Tso have started “synchronised and organised disengagement”. The agreement was reached in the ninth round of military talks between Corps Commanders in January 2021.

August 2021: A hotline is established between ground commanders in Kongra La in north Sikkim and Khamba Dzong in the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

October 2021: Talks between Indian and Chinese military commanders to resolve a protracted standoff broke down. Both countries blamed each other for the failure to make progress.

December 2021: Despite official disengagement at the friction points of Galwan, Gogra and Pangong Tso, satellite images showed China was building infrastructure to beef up forces in Ladakh.

Why did actor Richa Chadha apologise for her ‘Galwan says Hi’ tweet?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Actor Richa Chadha kicked up a storm after posting the comment in response to the Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement on taking Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) back.

Actor Richa Chadha apologised for her “Galwan says Hi” tweet and deleted it amid huge backlash over the comment. The actor stirred a controversy after posting the comment in response to the Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement on taking Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) back.

Soon after posting the tweet, there were calls to boycott the Fukrey actor on social media.

Chadha later deleted the tweet and issued an apology, saying she had “no idea” about the furore her tweet had caused.

Why are people angry?

On Tuesday, Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi commented about Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks on taking back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and said the Indian Army was always ready to carry out the government’s orders, ANI reported.

“The military is always ready to make sure that ceasefire understanding is never broken as it is in the interest of both nations. But if broken at any time, we will give them a befitting reply,” the top army commander said.

Responding to this, Chadha had tweeted, “Galwan says hi”, referring to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash in which 20 Indian Army soldiers were killed and around 35-40 soldiers from China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had lost their lives, News18 reported.

Chadha’s tweet led to a severe backlash from netizens who called it “shameful and disgraceful” and criticised the actor for “mocking the sacrifice” of Indian soldiers.

Complaints about Chadha

Producer Ashoke Pandit filed an FIR against the Gangs of Wasseypur actor in Mumbai, saying no one had the right to mock Indian soldiers, Indian Express reported.

Advocate Vineet Jindal also filed a complaint with the Delhi Police Commissioner on the “derogatory statement” by the Bollywood actor.

Actor Akshay Kumar condemned the actor on the tweet.

What did Chadha say?

In her apology, Chadha said that her grandfather was also part of the Army and that she did not intentionally wish to offend or hurt anyone. She said her grandfather was Lieutenant Colonel who took a bullet in the leg during the Indo-China war in 1960s. Her uncle was also a paratrooper.

“A whole family is affected when a son is martyred or even injured while saving the nation which is made up of people like us and I personally know how it feels. It is an emotive issue for me,” she said.

2 years after Galwan clashes, talks continue — as does military buildup

Summary

Despite the disengagement of soldiers from Pangong Tso, Gogra-Hot Springs area and Galwan Valley, there are still around 60,000 troops each on either either side of the LAC in the Ladakh area.

Even though two years have passed since the deadliest clash in 45 years between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, the two countries are still engaged in talks for the disengagement process along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). But an early resolution to the standoff is nowhere in sight.

So far, the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have held 14 rounds of talks since the Galwan clashes and one before June 15, 2020, to resolve the standoff, Hindustan Times reported.

What happened on June 15, 2020?

On June 15, 2020, the two armies engaged in a violent clash in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. The clash was said to be one of the worst in 45 years. Tensions started escalating weeks before the clash when both armies rushed to deploy more soldiers at the border.

India claimed that the Chinese troops had moved into the Indian side of the LAC. The initial talks for disengagement were held on June 6 between local military commanders of both the armies. However, when the Indian Army noticed a Chinese camp in the buffer zone, a skirmish started.

Although the PLA initially said only four soldiers died in the battle, a report by a group of social media researchers this year said at least 38 PLA troops drowned while crossing a river in darkness, Australian newspaper The Klaxon reported.

Talks continue

India and China have not made much headway in diplomatic talks in the past two years as a trust deficit haunts the ongoing dialogue, Hindustan Times quoted an official as saying.

“As long as talks are on, some forward movement in disengagement can be expected. It’s hard to give a timeline for comprehensive disengagement,” another official told the newspaper.

The last meeting was held on May 31 when officials agreed to continue discussions in the 16th meeting of military commanders.

60k troops on both sides & more

In August 2021, both Indian and Chinese armies pulled back frontline troops from the Gogra-Hot Springs sector. However, despite the disengagement of soldiers from Pangong Tso, Gogra-Hot Springs area and Galwan Valley, there are still around 60,000 troops each from both sides in the Ladakh region.

The infrastructure build-up by China’s People’s Liberation Army includes building of connecting roads to highways, construction of habitats and deployment of heavy weaponry and of course drones. India for its part has launched five major road projects in Ladakh.

China has ramped up border infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) despite a military standoff with India, said reports. The build-up by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China includes connecting roads to highways, construction of housing units and deployment of heavy weaponry.

The PLA has built at least eight roads towards the LAC from China’s G219 highway, according to latest reports. These run from the salt water lake Tianshuihai in the Xinjiang region towards Galwan valley and from Kangxiwar in China’s southwestern Xinjiang region to the Karakoram Pass. Connecting roads have also been constructed north-south along these lateral roads.

Sources told ANI that the Chinese were also constructing new airstrips apart from the main bases in Kashgar, Gar Gunsa and Hotan.

New roads

According to News18, a road has been constructed connecting Sirijap at Finger 8 at the north bank of the Pangong Tso lake to the G219 highway.

Added to this, China has built a highway from Rutog County in the Tibet Autonomous Region to the Spanggur lake south of Pangong tso. Another road runs from south of Shiquanhe to Chumar in eastern Ladakh.

The three regions — Tianshuihai, Rutog County and Shiquanhe – lie close to the G219 highway.

“These additional road constructions and upgradation of existing roads will ensure that China will have a direct road connectivity to areas opposite important Indian military posts along the LAC, from Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) in the north to Galwan valley, Pangong tso and Chumar in the south,” a government source told News18.

The ANI report said the Chinese were better placed in the area in terms of shelters, road connectivity and acclimatisation this winter, compared to last year.

Rockets and missile regiments have been placed in Tibet Autonomous Region, while drones have been deployed for surveillance in the sector, sources told ANI.

Airstrips and jetties

News18 corroborated the ANI report on airstrips, saying the Chinese were constructing heliports at Xaidulla, Tianshuihai, Shiquanhe and Domar regions.

Though the Chinese have not built bridges over the Pangong tso, there are small crossings at certain points for troops to cross when the lake freezes.

There is also a new jetty at Finger 8 in Pangong tso with 50 patrol boats.

India too ramps up infra

The Indian defence ministry has launched five major road projects in Ladakh by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), including the Hanuthang-Handanbroke-Zungpal-Turtuk road between the Indus valley and the Shyok valley.

The BRO will also build a connecting road from Pooh in Himachal Pradesh to Chumar in Ladakh. It will also complete an alternate road for Daulat Beg Oldie from Sasoma connecting Saser La and Gapshan and merging with the existing route to DBO.

The BRO will also construct multiple roads and bridges in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh along the LAC.

Chinese village

Earlier, the US Department of Defense said China had built a 100-home civilian village in disputed territory in Arunachal Pradesh. Media reports had claimed the Chinese had stepped up activities along the Tsari river near Migyitun town. The report said discussions between the two nations to resolve border disputes failed to progress as the Chinese claimed India provoked them with “increased infrastructure development” near the LAC.

A series of confrontations between the two armies along the border culminated in the violent clash in June last year in Galwan valley. At least 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number from the Chinese side were killed in the clash.

New Delhi’s concerns

Earlier this month, New Delhi communicated its concerns over the infrastructure build-up to Beijing in the latest Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination of India-China Border Affairs meeting.

While both nations agreed to resolve the border issues, they are yet to decide on the date for the next round of military talks.

India delivers diplomatically at the UNSC amidst US-China strategic rivalry

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The meeting is significant because India emerged as a stabiliser in the tussle over the resolution that sparked the heated debate between the US and Chinese representatives over the issue of maritime security

The battle for mastery in the Indo-Pacific continues. The latest battleground is the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) virtual meeting on August 9th, which marked one of the highest levels of participation. The UN Security Council meeting convened under the agenda “Maintenance of International Peace & Security”, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was attended by several heads of state and government of UNSC member states, and foreign ministers, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as well as high-level briefers from the UN System and key regional organizations.

Despite China’s opposition, an unprecedented India-led UN Security Council session underscored the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The resolution denounced China’s operations in the South China Sea, which violated the UNCLOS, which defines the legal framework for maritime activities, including combating illegal activities at sea. The meeting is significant because India emerged as a stabiliser in the tussle over the resolution that sparked the heated debate between the US and Chinese representatives over the issue of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, where a great power contest for mastery of the region remains intense.

The arrival of an authoritarian and assertive China has heightened concerns about Indo-Pacific security and stability. Particularly concerning is China’s continued defiance of international laws governing free navigation and maritime trade in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Over the last decade, China has worked to build military infrastructure and consolidate its position in the South and East China Seas, as evidenced by the construction of artificial islands and the bullying of countries by its fishing militia. This became more pronounced during the COVID-19 outbreak, as evidenced by China’s aggressive behaviour toward the Philippines, Japan, and Vietnam, revealing its geopolitical intent to dominate the Indo-Pacific waters.

Despite the fact that the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) ruled in 2016 that China’s operations in the South China Sea are illegal, Beijing has continued unabated, escalating tensions. The award issued by the Arbitral Tribunal in the South China Sea, which was constituted at the request of the Philippines, on July 12, 2016, was not accepted by China. According to China, the award is void ab initio and has no legal force. However, under international pressure, China agreed to establish UNCLOS precedence at the UNSC meeting.

The South China Sea has emerged as one of the major flashpoints in China’s fractious and intense relationship with the United States. Dissatisfied with the resolution, the Chinese delegation took advantage of the opportunity to criticize the Quad nations, accusing Japan of dumping Fukushima-contaminated water into the Pacific and requesting that the ASEAN countries develop a code of conduct. China’s illegal territorial claims in the resource-rich waters were rejected by US representative Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also criticized China’s conduct in the South China Sea and its authoritative and assertive posture. During the debate, the strategic rivalry between the United States and China resurfaced. The UN Security Council virtual meeting is the second high-level diplomatic meeting where the US and China have exchanged sharp rebukes under the Biden administration, following the diplomatic row in Alaska. After successfully containing the outbreak at home, China saw an opportunity to challenge the US’s dominance in the Indo-Pacific but has encountered firm resistance from the US. The strategic rivalry between the hegemon and the challenger has since heated up.

What has been hailed as India’s first UNSC-chaired meeting, which called for collaborative efforts to develop a framework for addressing maritime challenges, India successfully used a consensus-building strategy, consulting all UNSC members to find the most acceptable phrasing of the resolution. All delegates applauded PM Modi’s five-point principles, which called for the UNSC to draft a plan for international maritime security. With its growing military power, India has emerged as a major player amid the intense US-China geopolitics and growing significance of the Indo-Pacific. India has also emerged as critical in the US and other developed nations’ efforts to repair the global supply chain, which the world has allowed China to dominate by default.

Also Read: China coercive, intimidating to back South China Sea claims, says US

India’s Indo-Pacific strategy has evolved. From the Look East strategy to the Act East strategy to the Indo-Pacific strategy, India has established itself as one of the leading Indo-Pacific powers. PM Modi’s visions for Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), and India’s growing strategic partnerships with the Quad members—the United States, Japan, and Australia—as well as like-minded China-wary Indo-Pacific nations such as Vietnam and South Korea under the ACT East strategy—are regarded as important Indo-Pacific strategies in ensuring the free nation’s effort for an open and secure Indo-Pacific.

India’s handling of the UNCLOS resolution at the UN Security Council strengthens New Delhi’s diplomatic prowess. China has used its veto power against India’s interests and has been the main impediment to India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council, as Beijing is opposed to New Delhi’s inclusion in the UN’s highest decision-making body. During the recent India-China violent clash at the Galwan Valley on the Indo-Tibet border, India received substantial diplomatic support from major world powers, including four P5 members – the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia. The relationship between the two Asian giants has deteriorated, and their competitive relationship has further escalated amid the unfolding Indo-Pacific strategic geometry, as India’s security ties with the US, Japan, Australia, and Vietnam continue to strengthen.

Historically, the United Nations Security Council has been a battleground for great power rivalry. The growing economic and strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region, which is regarded as critical to global prosperity in the twenty-first century, has sparked a great power competition, and the top global body will be a new battleground for mastery of the waters between the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

About 43% Indian consumers didn’t buy made-in-China items post Galwan clashes: Survey

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Imports from China, however, increased 42 percent year-on-year during January-May 2021, due to a rise in the import of life-saving medical equipment and medical oxygen equipment by India from China, according to the report.

About half of Indian consumers surveyed said they did not buy made-in-China products in the past 12 months as an aftermath of the border tensions with China, a report by online firm LocalCircles on Monday said. The report is based on a survey, which was conducted during June 1-10 and covered 17,800 citizens residing in 281 districts of the country.

Imports from China, however, increased 42 percent year-on-year during January-May 2021, due to a rise in the import of life-saving medical equipment and medical oxygen equipment by India from China, according to the report. ”In reality, China’s share in Indian imports for intermediate goods is 12 percent, and capital goods is 30 percent, while final consumer goods is 26 percent.

”The first question in the survey sought to understand how many products that were made in China did Indian consumers purchase in the past 12 months. In response, 43 percent said they did not buy anything made in China,” the report said. Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in clash between India and Chinese troops in border escalation at the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

The Indian Army in a statement had said that there were casualties on both sides. Breaking down the poll, LocalCircles said 34 percent of respondents said they purchased 1-2 products, and 8 percent bought 3-5 of them.

”There were four percent of consumers who bought 5-10 made-in-China products, three percent said 10-15, one percent said over 20, and another one percent said 15-20 products. Six percent of Indian consumers did not have an opinion,” the report said. After the attack on Indian soldiers on the India-China border, many Indians had expressed their intent to boycott Chinese-made products.

Another LocalCircles survey, conducted in November 2020 (around the festive season), indicated that 71 percent of Indian consumers did not purchase Made-in-China products, and many of those who ended up buying were because of lower prices. ”Though Chinese trade with India declined in the calendar year 2020 by 5.6 percent to USD 87.6 billion, the 5 months of the calendar year 2021 show a 42 percent increase in Chinese imports by value,” the latest report said.

It added that LocalCircles research suggests that this surge was particularly due to the rise in import of life-saving medical equipment and medical oxygen equipment by India from China as COVID-19 cases surged in the country. According to the latest survey report, household earnings were severely impacted with lockdowns, and for some, buying the lowest cost product was not a choice but the only option and, hence, they ended up buying Chinese items.

India’s economic recovery, which looked on solid footing in January 2021 with leading global institutions predicting 11 percent GDP growth for 2021-22, has hit another speed bump with the lethal second COVID-19 wave putting almost all states in a 45-60 day lockdown, the report said. The survey found that 60 percent who bought made-in-China products purchased only 1-2 items, 14 percent said they bought 3-5 products, seven percent bought 5-10, two percent said 10-15, and another two percent said more than 20 products. ”It must be kept in mind that there are many Made-in-China products that do not have an Indian counterpart that offers similar or higher value-quality-uniqueness combinations.

”Similarly, many global manufacturers of gadgets and appliances have their factories in China producing for global demand and while such products may carry a global brand name, they are produced in China,” the report said. It added that during the pandemic in 2020 and in 2021, many Indians purchased pulse oximeters to measure their SPo2 levels and 90 percent of these oximeters available in India were made in China.

”Majority Indian consumers who purchased made-in-China products did so because they are the cheapest available option and offer value for money,” the report said. It, however, added that 40 percent of them also highlighted uniqueness and 38 percent highlighted quality as a differentiator, and ”that is something the Government of India and Indian manufacturers and MSMEs must act upon”.

‘A year after Galwan clashes, India better prepared to deal with any eventualities’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

A year after the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese armies in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, India is better prepared to deal with any eventualities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as the trust deficit between the two sides persists, people in the defence establishment said on Monday. They said the Galwan Valley episode helped Indian security planners crystalise the country’s approach towards China as well as recalibrate the shortterm and longterm goals considering the possible security threats.

They said the Galwan Valley episode helped Indian security planners crystalise the country’s approach towards China as well as recalibrate the short-term and long-term goals considering the possible security threats.

In the first deadly clash in the border area in nearly five decades, 20 Indian soldiers were killed on June 15 last year in the Galwan Valley, triggering a large deployment of troops and heavy weaponry by both armies at the friction points. In February, China officially acknowledged that five Chinese military officers and soldiers were killed in the clashes with the Indian Army though it is widely believed that the death toll was higher.

”We are much better prepared militarily. The Galwan Valley clashes helped us prioritise our national security approach towards the northern border,” said one of the persons cited above. It is learnt that the Chinese military has also enhanced its positions in several depth areas in the high-altitude region.

The people said the clashes also helped in hastening the ”jointness” among the three services and cited the example of a united approach by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force in dealing with the overall challenge along the LAC. ”The clashes brought out a high degree of synergy between the Indian Army and the IAF,” said another person.

The people cited above said the ”trust deficit” between the two sides still persists and India is fully ready to deal with any situation in eastern Ladakh and other sectors along the LAC. The ties between the two countries came under severe strain following the Galwan Valley clashes that took place over a month after the border standoff began between the Indian and Chinese militaries in multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh.

Days after the incident, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar bluntly told his Chinese counterpart that the ”unprecedented development will have a serious impact on the bilateral relationship. India held the neighbouring country accountable for triggering the Ladakh standoff by violating rules of engagement on border management and conveyed that peace and tranquillity along the LAC is the basis for the progress of the rest of the relationship and they cannot be separated.

Months later, Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed on a five-point pact to resolve the row at a meeting in Moscow on September 10. The two sides completed the withdrawal of troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February following a series of military and diplomatic talks.

They are now engaged in talks to extend the disengagement process to the remaining friction points. There was no visible forward movement in disengagement of troops in the remaining friction points as the Chinese side did not show flexibility in their approach on it at the 11th round of military talks.

Last month, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane said that there can be no de-escalation without complete disengagement at all friction points in eastern Ladakh and that the Indian Army is prepared for all contingencies in the region. Gen Naravane also said that India is dealing with China in a ”firm” and ”non-escalatory” manner to ensure the sanctity of its claims in eastern Ladakh and that it was even open to initiating confidence-building measures.

India has been insisting on complete disengagement in remaining friction points to de-escalate the situation in eastern Ladakh.
