Long COVID-19 affects 10 percent to 30 percent of all COVID-19 patients: Report

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Common symptoms of long COVID include difficulty in maintaining concentration, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss, and sometimes even a persistent loss of smell.

As the Delta variant of COVID-19 has led to a resurgence in new infections across the world, reports suggest that between 10 and 30 percent of all COVID-19 patients are likely to suffer from another form of long-term symptoms.

Long COVID is when patients suffer from symptoms over a long period of time. Symptoms can persist for longer than a year in some cases and can often be debilitating.

“Even if it’s not as striking as people dying, you ignore it at your peril. In terms of healthcare burden or healthcare cost, we’re on track for this being as big a problem to us as rheumatoid arthritis, the biggest autoimmune disease in the world,” said Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College London, told The Wall Street Journal.

COVID-19 cases are surging globally and experts suggest that the spike may lead to a large number of people getting affected by long COVID.

Common symptoms of long COVID include difficulty in maintaining concentration, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss,, and sometimes even a persistent loss of smell. A Lancet study associated a total of over 200 symptoms with the disease.

A recent study conducted in the UK found that potentially two million individuals in the country could be suffering from long COVID symptoms. “Estimates ranged from 5.8% of the population experiencing one or more persistent symptoms post-COVID-19 (corresponding to over 2 million adults in England), to 2.2% for three or more persistent symptoms (just under a million adults in England),” the researchers noted.

The mechanisms and pathways of long COVID are not yet understood but the point to the fact is that the deadly disease is not an infection that targets just the respiratory system.

While more research is needed, there are hopes that soon a diagnosing test may be available to check whether patients suffer from long COVID or not.

Altmann’s research team in the Imperial College is part of the study to develop a diagnosable test for long COVID. The researcher was confident that such a test can be developed within the next 6 months.

Banking wrap: Earnings show signs of rising retail stress, small biz face disruptions as banks freeze current accounts

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The disruption in lives and livelihoods has had a deep impact on the loan repayment capability of small borrowers. And this is very clearly visible from the earnings reported by major banks so far.

Burnt by the large bad loan pile-up in the corporate segment after the lending boom of 2004-2008, Indian banks turned aggressively to retail loans to lower risks over the last few years.

Every bank, big and small, touted retail as the “growth engine”, prompting a central banker to remark, “Whatever has happened in the corporate financial world in the past couple of years, probably now everyone is moving towards retail lending. But retail banking cannot be a panacea for credit growth.” That was 2015.

Cut to 2020-2021, and the pandemic has turned this bet on its head. The disruption in lives and livelihoods has had a deep impact on the loan repayment capability of small borrowers. And this is very clearly visible from the earnings reported by major banks so far.

From ICICI Bank, Union Bank of India HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank to LIC Housing Finance and Mahindra Financial Services, there’s hardly a lender who has not been bruised.

ICICI Bank recently reported Rs 7,231 crore of fresh bad loans for the first quarter. Of this, Rs 6,773 crore was from retail and business banking. Axis Bank narrated a similar story. Eighty-four percent of bad loans during the quarter came from retail loans. Union Bank of India had Rs 7,049 crore of new bad loans to report for the quarter, the bulk of which was from retail and business loans.

Mahindra Finance, which lends in the auto, tractor, car, CV segments across rural and semi-urban regions, saw gross non-performing assets (NPAs) shot up 15.46 percent in June 2021 from 9.19 percent a year ago. Yes Bank said its retail NPAs jumped by 40 basis points in a quarter to 3.3 percent of the portfolio, while the overall gross NPA ratio stood at 15.6 percent. You get the idea.

God forbid if we see a third wave or if the situation prolongs, the aggressive retail lending bet may turn into an even bigger worry.

While the pandemic rages on, another storm is brewing in the financial world. Lakhs and lakhs of businesses, small and large, are facing disruptions as they suddenly find their current accounts frozen or closed down by banks.
It’s not exactly sudden. Banks were given almost a year to comply with RBI’s new current account rules (we’ll get to those in just a bit), including an extension granted earlier this year. Banks also gave notice to the impacted customers, but alas, like all other work that only gets done when the deadline nears, this too was done in a hectic frenzy over the past few days, leaving many customers confused, helpless.

Back to the RBI rules. The central bank simply said that borrowers should route payments to and from current accounts maintained with banks that have the highest loan exposure to them. RBI does not want Mr X to have a loan account with Bank of Apples, and maintain a current account for all his receivables and transactions with Bank of Oranges. This way, Bank of Apples has no clear picture of what Mr X’s cash flows are, and RBI believes, this is one of the key reasons for frauds, fund diversion, and NPAs in the system. Hence, the new rules in August 2020 that said (1) banks simply cannot open a current account for any borrower who has an existing cash credit or overdraft (CC/OD) facility, (2) banks can open current accounts for borrowers with no existing CC or OD facilities, provided they have overall system exposure of under Rs 5 crore. Above Rs 5 crore upto Rs 50 crores, only lending banks can open current accounts. Non-lending banks cannot, (3) for borrowers with total loans of over Rs 50 crore from the banking system, only such a bank that has a minimum 10 percent of the exposure can open the borrower’s current account.

Now there are several reasons why borrowers want to have current accounts in banks where they may not have a loan account. It could be that they have had a current account with a particular bank for a long time and want to keep it there, or that a bank offers better cash management facilities and the latest tech so more convenience, or simply because they don’t want their lender bank to be able to directly access their cash. Either way, with the deadline to comply with these rules ending on July 31, banks had no option but to close such current accounts or face action from RBI.

Many aggrieved customers have taken to social media to express their anguish, finding their accounts frozen or closed overnight. These are mostly small businesses who can’t receive or make payments from their accounts anymore until their accounts are reconciled, transferred to a nodal bank etc.

One can barely blame the regulator for trying to clean up the system, put rules in place to ensure better monitoring of funds. Banks have dragged their feet for months hoping for another deadline extension, and the customers are now in a soup.

Tokyo Olympics: Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica wins gold medal in women’s 100 meters

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica wins gold medal in women’s 100 meters in Olympic record 10.61 seconds.

2016 Rio Olympics champion Elaine Thompson-Herah led the way for an all-Jamaican sweep of the podium in the women’s 100m final at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

In the Olympic Stadium, Elaine, the defending champion, clinched the gold medal with a new Olympic record of 10.61 seconds. Her compatriots, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the silver medal with 10.74 seconds, while Shericka Jackson clocked 10.76 seconds for the bronze medal.

Elaine’s timing in Tokyo broke the Olympics record of 33 years set by American Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988. She is also the second Jamaican woman to defend her title in the event, after Shelly-Ann’s back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2012. The win also continues Jamaica’s domination in the event, winning the gold since the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finishing in the top three since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Jamaica’s last clean sweep in the event came in the Bird’s Nest Stadium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Back then, Shelly-Ann triumphed with a gold-medal winning timing of 10.78 seconds. Her teammates, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart shared the silver medal with a timing of 10.98 seconds.

Shelly-Ann, the fastest sprinter from the qualifiers, was the quickest to start out of the eight women in the final. At one point, she was neck-in-neck with Elaine. But Shelly-Ann could not surge past her compatriot in the second half of the race. Elaine increased her speed and created a gap enough for her to celebrate with a left salute even before crossing the line.

Overall, six women ran under 11 seconds, making the race as one of the fastest in history. Marie-Josée Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast came fourth behind the troika of Jamaican sprinters. The Switzerland duo of Ajla Del Ponte and Mujinga Kambundji finished fifth and sixth respectively.

Saturn to glow brightly on August 1-2; here’s how to watch it

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Saturn will shine bright when it is in opposition on August 1 and 2. Here is how to watch it

One can see Saturn shine bright when it is in opposition—the Earth will be between the Saturn and the Sun—on August 1 and 2, according to EarthSky.org.

In this position, Saturn will appear bright and burning making for a wonderful spectacle to see.

Though this phenomenon takes place once every year, it happens two weeks later each year. In 2016, it was recorded on June 3, then on June 15 in 2017, and on June 27 in 2018. In 2019, the Saturn opposition was observed on July 9 while it was July 20 in 2020.

One can view Saturn’s opposition using a telescope at 2 am ET on August 2, or 11.30 pm IST. In case you miss the view on these two days or there are clouds in your area, EarthSky said Saturn will stay in that position for the rest of the month. However, people can only catch a glimpse of the planet on August 1 and 2 when it is really close to Earth.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest planet in the solar system. It has over 60 moons and it would take nine earths to span the diameter of Saturn (not including the rings). The planet has thousands of rings made of ice and rock. Like its fellow gas giant Jupiter, Saturn too is made up of helium and hydrogen.

Sebi allows AMCs to offer instant access facility in overnight mutual fund schemes

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Earlier, Asset Management Companies (AMCs) were allowed to offer such a facility only in liquid schemes.

Markets regulator Sebi on Friday allowed asset management companies to offer instant access facility in overnight mutual fund schemes. Earlier, Asset Management Companies (AMCs) were allowed to offer such a facility only in liquid schemes.

Instant Access Facility (IAF) facilitates credit of redemption proceeds in the bank account of the investor on the same day of redemption request. In a circular, Sebi said ”MFs/ AMCs can offer Instant Access Facility (IAF) only in overnight and liquid schemes of the MF”.

Also, the regulator has tweaked the framework with respect to treatment of unclaimed redemption and dividend amounts. Sebi said the unclaimed redemption and dividend amounts that are currently allowed to be deployed only in call money market or money market instruments, can also be invested in a separate plan of only overnight, liquid and money market mutual fund schemes floated by mutual funds specifically for deployment of the unclaimed amounts.

This is subject to the condition that such schemes where the unclaimed redemption and dividend amounts are deployed will be only those overnight, liquid and money market mutual fund schemes which are placed in A-1 cell — relatively low interest rate risk and relatively low credit risk– of potential risk class matrix. The regulator said the framework related to IAF will be applicable with immediate effect while those pertaining to unclaimed redemption and dividend amounts will come into effect from December 1.

In market parlance, overnight funds are debt funds that invest in overnight assets, or securities with a residual maturity of one day. Such funds invest in CBLOs (Collateralised Borrowing and Lending Obligations), overnight reverse repos, and other debt or money market securities that mature in one day. Liquid mutual fund is a debt fund that invests in fixed-income instruments like commercial paper, government securities, treasury bills, among others, with a maturity of up to 91 days.

Global climate change may kill 83 million people by 2100: Study

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

A new study has claimed that due to rising global temperatures caused by runaway greenhouse emissions, over 83 million people may die by 2100.

The cost of climate change may well be 83 million people by 2100, the same number as the population of Germany. A new study has revealed that due to rising global temperatures caused by runaway greenhouse emissions, over 83 million people may die by 2100.

The study by Columbia University’s Earth Institute is the first of its kind to calculate the mortality impact of climate change and will possibly push governments to increase the cost of emissions.

“Based on the decisions made by individuals, businesses or governments, this tells you how many lives will be lost or saved,” said Daniel Bressler, the study’s lead author.

Bressler used existing underlying models to develop his own calculations on the possible “mortality cost of carbon”. However, Bressler’s research hasn’t included deaths that have been caused by secondary effects of global warming like rising seas, superstorms, crop failures, or changing disease patterns. This means that the 83 million mortality figure may be a vast underestimate of the true cost of global warming in the 21st century.

According to Bressler’s research, every 4,434 tonnes of carbon released last year will kill one person within this century. Alarmingly, his research also predicts global temperatures rising by 4.1°C by the turn of the century.

The emissions of 3.5 American citizens over their lifetime would lead to the death of one person. At the same time, it would take the lifetime emissions of 33 Indians at the current rate to lead to the death of one person, the study claimed.

Urgent measures to contain and reduce greenhouse emissions are needed as other recent studies show that the tipping point of a global climate disaster may already be upon us.

Bressler’s study may well be the impetus needed by governments to start taxing carbon emissions more harshly, a step that many activists say is essential for reducing emissions from large corporations.

While the IMF had calculated a price of $75 per tonne of carbon as a carbon price, the study reveals that the actual price should be much higher. Several countries have already implemented a carbon price or are in the process of doing so. However, no such plans exist in India yet.
