KL Rahul scored scored 82 off 53 deliveries with the help of nine boundaries and three maximums to spearhead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) chase and propel them to a solid eight-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Ekana Sports City in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Friday.

Rahul was thus rewarded with the Player of the Match award, as he captained his troops well to restrict CSK to a modest 176/6 at the end of the first innings in addition to his batting exploits. The same match saw MS Dhoni playing a blistering cameo of 28 runs that he notched in nine deliveries, bringing about three boundaries and a couple of maximums to extend his purple patch.

In fact, LSG star Quinton de Kock chipped in with 54 runs from 43 deliveries as well, as he hit five boundaries and a six in his brisk innings. Overall, wicket-keepers and their prominence in the T20 format has enhanced massively, and their performances with the bat are kept close tabs on by observers too.

Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa are the other two players in this list. Whilst Karthik has been a force to reckon with the bat for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Uthappa won the IPL title with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in his penultimate season in the competition.

MS Dhoni went on a six-hitting spree to power Chennai Super Kings to a competitive 176 for six against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.

Dhoni slammed a four and a six off Mohsin before smashing Thakur for another maximum. He finished the innings with two more fours as 19 came off the last over.

Dhoni picked a ball from Thakur’s over and smashed a 101m six which was also his 65th six for Dhoni in the 20th over of the IPL.

Jadeja slammed five fours and a six to anchor the innings after a top and middle-order batting failure but Ali (30 off 20) and Dhoni (28 off 9) swung the momentum back with a late charge after the 16th over to take them to a fighting total.

Opting to bowl, KL Rahul was spot on with his bowling changes as the pacers put the CSK batters under pressure initially before spinner Krunal Pandya tightened the noose in the middle overs. But Ali’s three sixes off Ravi Bishnoi (1/44) and Mohsin Khan’s 19th over which yielded 15 overs, including four wides, a six and a four and a 19-run 20th over handed the initiative back to CSK. The last four overs yielded 63.

LSG seamers were on the money from the start as they exploited the conditions to pick up two wickets in the powerplay. Opener Rachin Ravindra’s (0) awful run continued as left-arm pacer Mohsin bowled a perfect first delivery to rattle his stumps.

Rahane (36), who opened the innings again, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (17) looked to steady things with the former pulling LSG debutant Matt Henry for the first six of their innings as 13 came off the over. Yash Thakur was introduced next in the attack and he justified Rahul’s decision by inducing an outside edge off Gaikwad with a length ball as the captain did the rest.

Rahane, however, carted two fours in the last two balls as CSK accumulated 13 runs in the over. Ravindra Jadeja promoted to no. 4, picked a boundary off Henry in the next over as CSK scored 52 for 2 in the first six overs.

Rahul’s decision to give another over to Bishnoi, however, backfired as Moeen slammed three sixes as 19 came off the 18th over before perishing. LSG paid the price for a sloppy overrate as Dhoni slammed a four and a six off Mohsin before smashing Thakur for another maximum. He finished the innings with two more fours as 19 came off the last over.

KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock produced a chasing masterclass to power Lucknow Super Giants to a comfortable eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL match on Friday.

Asked to bat first, Ravindra Jadeja came up with a solid unbeaten 57 before Moeen Ali (30 off 20) and MS Dhoni (28 off 9) went on a six-hitting spree to take CSK to a fighting 176 for six.

KL Rahul (82) and De Kock (54) batted with authority during their match-winning alliance of 134, the highest partnership for any wicket at the Ekana Stadium, as LSG scored 180 for 2 in 19 overs to recover from back-to-back loss and consolidate their position in the table.

Opener Rachin Ravindra’s (0) awful run continued as left-arm pacer Mohsin rattled his stumps, while Ruturaj Gaikwad (17) fell to Yash Thakur, who induced an outside edge from the CSK skipper. Rahane (36), who opened the innings again, played some exquisite shots, pulling LSG debutant Matt Henry for the first six of their innings as 13 came off that over.

The Mumbaikar also carted two fours off Thakur to accumulate another 13 runs in the fifth over. Jadeja, promoted to no. 4, picked a boundary off Henry in the next over as CSK scored 52 for 2 in the first six overs.

Owing to the slowness of the track, LSG skipper immediately introduced spinners Krunal and Bishnoi and the former struck in his second over, cleaning up Rahane.

CSK’s man-in-form Shivam Dube too failed to fire with Stoinis (1/7) justifying Rahul’s decision to hand over the ball to him, striking in his first ball as the left-handed batter sliced one up in the air.

Dhoni hit the likes of Mohsin Khan and Yash Thakur for cleaners by displaying a wide array of shots, which included a huge 101 meter long maximum as well.

Dhoni’s cameo comprised three boundaries and a couple of maximums. He batted at a strike rate of 311.11, and wasn’t afraid to try new shots that he seems to have developed in his arsenal. For once, he walked across the over wicket to lob Mohsin for a six behind the stumps. In the final delivery of the innings, he produced a cracking flat batted effort that made a wide yorker storm past point for a boundary.

Mohsin seemed to have come in with a clever strategy of taking pace off the ball and keeping it out of Dhoni’s hitting range. However, the 42-year-old was all prepared to take on those challenges, displaying some crafty shots along with a six that he muscled out of the park to get his team to a formidable score of 176.

Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bowl against Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match on Friday. Chennai struggled with the bat right from the powerplay over losing four crucial wickets by the time they reached 7 overs.

IPL 2024: RCB restores three lakes in Bengaluru as part of its Go Green Initiative

As per India Cares Foundation’s latest report, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have completed the restoration work of two major lakes in Bengaluru upscaling the water holding capacity of these lakes and adding civic amenities in a third lake, while improving the biodiversity around these water bodies as part of RCB Go Green Initiative.

RCB launched the Lake Improvement Works Project as part of their ESG commitment in October 2023 with a focus on desilting and developing the Ittgalpura Lake and Sadenahalli Lake. These lakes were selected for being highly water-stressed areas, with borewell depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 feet. The areas also lack access to Kaveri River water and are totally dependent on groundwater and surface water.

According to the report, Over 1.20 lakh tons of silt and sand have been removed at the Ittgalpura Lake and Sadenahalli Lake which has been used to create bunds and pathways across the lakes and 52 farmers have taken the soil to use as topsoil for their fields as well.

A total of nine acres of lake land have been recovered, resulting in the creation of stabilization ponds and wetlands. These features will benefit the birds and animals inhabiting the lakes. The water holding capacity of the lakes has also increased for upto 17 acres.

The lakes will not only facilitate groundwater recharge but also serve as vital sources of drinking water and support agricultural activities in the surrounding area. It will provide additional livelihood opportunities for the fishermen and farmers of the two lakes, who can now harvest three times as much as before. Currently reliant on borewells for agriculture, farmers can now utilize these rejuvenated lakes for farming and other purposes, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability.

Meanwhile, at Kannur Lake, the objective has been to improve community ownership through the creation of civic amenities as lake assets. Ethno-Medicinal Plants Parks, Bamboo Parks, and Butterfly Parks are also being created at all three lakes as the initiative aims to improve and sustain the biodiversity of the lakes while also serving as educational hubs for children to understand the ecosystem.

It must be noted that the National Compilation on Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India 2022 report by the Central Groundwater Board of India estimates that over 12% of groundwater blocks in India have been over-exploited, 12% in the semi-critical stage and 3% are in critical stage.

Through collaborative efforts with both local authorities and communities, we have manged to take a small step in the bigger purpose of restoring the old pride of Bengaluru, the lake city,” said Rajesh Menon, VP and Head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Such initiatives would be key to raising awareness about the ground-level water situation in and around Bengaluru. The process of lake rejuvenation adheres strictly to established procedures and standards drawn from civil engineering, environmental engineering, and related fields under the guidance of “Friends of Lakes”. These standards, meticulously outlined in textbooks, serve as guiding principles throughout the rejuvenation process. The successful revitalization of these lakes stands as a testament to the effectiveness of engineering and environmental standards, showcasing a proven approach to lake restoration.

Asian Games and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sreeshankar Murali pulls out of Paris Olympics

Sreeshankar Murali withdraws from the 2024 Paris Olympics with less than 100 days to spare due to a knee injury. In an emotional Instagram post, Murali revealed that it felt like a nightmare after he injured himself during the training session and will have to go under surgery.

“All my life, I’ve dared to look a setback in the eye, accept situations I can’t change, and work hard at dictating the outcomes of those I can. Unfortunately, my Paris Olympic Games dream is over in what feels like a nightmare but is a reality,” Sreeshankar posted on Instagram.

Sreeshankar was the only Indian athlete to feature in the long jump competition in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Last year, he won silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championships, Supachalasai National Stadium, Bangkok.

“I suffered a knee injury during training on Tuesday, and all the tests and consultations later, it’s been decided that I would need surgery, ruling me out of the one single thing I have chased relentlessly all these years,” the 25-year-old said.

“To wake up healthy every day, and watch yourself get into the best shape of your life, is every athlete’s dream. I was living it, until this incident. Life writes strange scripts, and sometimes there is courage in accepting it and moving on. That’s what I will do. My journey to a comeback began the minute I injured my knee This road will be long, difficult and will take a lot out of me. The good thing is, I have a lot to give. I will overcome this, because that’s what Mamba Mentality is all about,” Sreeshankar wrote.

He had also won silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and also had a significant season at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

“I will need your prayers, love and positive energy. I may jump alone, but it takes a collective push before every leap. This is my biggest one yet,” he signed off.

A total of 205 delegations will parade at the grandiose opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics on more than 80 boats on the Seine. The ceremony will drift slowly from east to west, bridge to bridge, snaking six kilometers (3.7 miles) from Pont d’Austerlitz to Pont d’Iéna.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya has been penalised of ₹12 lakhs by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during the match against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mohali on Thursday.

“Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Punjab Kings at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on April 18,” the official statement by the league read.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the statement added.

The incident comes as a minor blot in what was otherwise a big, positive outcome for MI. They bagged their third victory of the campaign, edging past PBKS by nine runs in the encounter. Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh scored 62 and 45 respectively to drag PBKS close to the target after an early fall of wickets. However, MI, powered by a four-wicket haul by Jasprit Bumrah, ensured that they crossed over the finishing line eventually.

Earlier, a 78-run knock by Suryakumar Yadav ensured that MI got to 192 batting first. Suryakumar has had an indifferent period on the field since his comeback from a three-month-long injury lay-off. He has scored two ducks since his return to the side, but also played a couple of impressive knocks, with the team faring well whenever he has found his groove with the bat.
